  1. 6. Protein kinase C-dependent regulation of the epithelial barrier

    Author : Anita Sjö; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The intestinal epithelium is essential for the absorption of nutrients and for the defence against harmful substances in the gut. The permeability and barrier functions of epithelia are mainly controlled by the intercellular tight junctions. READ MORE

  2. 7. Mechanisms for leukocyte-mediated adjustment of endothelial barrier function

    Author : Narinder Gautam; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Inflammation; leukocyte extravasation; endothelial cells; vascular permeability; plasma leakage integrin signaling; heparin binding protein; contact phase; bradykinin.;

    Abstract : Extravasation of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMN) and associated plasma exsudation are key events in the inflammatory process. The mechanism by which activated PMN may induce increased vascular permeability for macromolecules is not fully understood but crucially dependent on an intact leukocytic beta2 integrin (CD11/CD18) adhesion receptor function. 3. 8. Innate lymphoid cells and cholesterol metabolism in intestinal barrier function

    Author : Sara Martina Parigi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The intestinal mucosa represents one of the largest barrier sites of our body, having to withstand a constant exposure to a plethora of environmental insults (including dietary compounds, xenobiotics, metabolites and microorganisms). While our body has evolved tolerance/ignorance towards some of these factors deemed beneficial for the host, it requires constant maintenance of epithelial barrier integrity and ability to mount pro-inflammatory responses to protect against potentially harmful environmental insults. 4. 9. Neuro-immuno-regulation of inflammation in the colonic mucosa : Focus on mast cells and eosinophils in bowel disorders

    Author : Maria Teresa Casado Bedmar; Åsa Keita; Johan D Söderholm; Marie Carlson; Melanie Gareau; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mast cells; Eosinophils; Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide; Neuro-immune; Intestinal barrier; Irritable bowel syndrome; Inflammatory bowel diseases; Ussing chamber; Advance image analysis;

    Abstract : Intestinal homeostasis is key to control uptake across the mucosa and protect from harmful substances. Disturbances in the bidirectional communication between the gut and the brain are implicated in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), being Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) the two most common IBD subtypes. 5. 10. Alternative methods for analysing moisture transport in buildings : Utilisation of tracer gas and natural stable isotopes

    Author : Kjartan Gudmundsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; tracer gas; water vapour permeability; diffusion; surface diffusion; isotopic analysis; deuterium; oxygen-18; fractionation; vapour barrier; transient numerical modelling of diffusion; Building engineering; Byggnadsteknik;

    Abstract : New methods, based on tracer gas measurements and isotopicanalysis can be used to evaluate the moisture properties ofbuilding materials and provide the means for forensic analysisof the origins and history of excessive water in buildings, theimmediate practical consequences of which will be the abilityto improve the moisture performance of constructions. It is shown, in theory and through measurements how thewater vapour permeability of porous building materials can witha good degree of accuracy be estimated with tracer gasmeasurements that provide an efficient alternative to the cupmethod.
