  1. 6. Immuno-regulatory dynamics of non-structural protein 1 of avian influenza A viruses : IFN-β, NF-κB and AP-1 perspectives

    Author : Muhammad Munir; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The type I interferon (IFN-α/β) system represents the first line of defense against influenza A viruses, and is mainly mediated by the interferon regulatory factors 3/7 (IRF3/7), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) transcription factors. Therefore, the non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of influenza A viruses has intrinsic abilities to disarm the host cell IFN system, and as a consequence is deeply connected to influenza virus pathogenicity and virulence. 2. 7. Glucocorticosteroid therapy and steroid resistance in inflammatory bowel disease

    Author : Lars Flood; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Ulcerative colitis; Crohn s disease; Steroid resistance; Glucocorticoid receptor; Nuclear Factor kappaB; Activator Protein 1; Adrenocorticotropin stimulation test; Metallothionein; Rofleponide;

    Abstract : Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD) are diseases of unknown aetiology often referred to as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) have been used since the 1950's to treat acute attacks of these diseases. READ MORE

  3. 8. Effects of lipid oxidation on transcriptional regulation and cell death

    Author : Mikko Ares; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : atherosclerosis; low density lipoprotein; lipid oxidation; nuclear factor-KB; activator protein-1; Iysophosphatidylcholine; tumor necrosis factor-alpha; oxysterol; Ca2 ; apoptosis; lipid accumulation;

    Abstract : Elevated levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL) in plasma are associated with an increased risk for atherosclerosis. Excessive accumulation of lipoproteins and lipids in the vascular wall is thought to lead to the development of advanced atherosclerotic lesions prone to rupture. READ MORE

  4. 9. Energy flow and metabolic efficiency attributed to brown adipose tissue

    Author : Gabriella von Essen; Jan Nedergaard; Susanne Klaus; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Brown adipose tissue; BAT; UCP1; diet-induced thermogenesis; DIT; obesity; high-fat diet; energy expenditure; fysiologi; Physiology;

    Abstract : The large capacity of brown adipose tissue (BAT) to expend energy as heat makes it an interesting potential player in weight regulation and other metabolic conditions. This is of particular interest as it has been recognized that adult humans possess BAT. READ MORE

  5. 10. Assessing carotid plaque structure

    Author : Isabel Goncalves; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Modified LDL; Antibodies; Lipids; AP-1; Cellularity; Extracellular Matrix; Calcification; Elastin; Stroke; Gray-Scale Median; Echogenicity; Ultrasound; Atherosclerosis; Carotid Plaque;

    Abstract : Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of death and disability in the western world. Its clinical complications include acute myocardial infarction, sudden death and stroke. Thirty to 40 % of all ischemic strokes are caused by a carotid stenosis. READ MORE
