  1. 1. Cellular and Molecular Mechanisms Underlying Acute Quadriplegic Myopathy : Studies in Experimental Animal Models and Intensive Care Unit Patients

    Author : Holly Norman; Lars Larsson; Thomas Sejersen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Neurosciences; Acute Quadriplegic Myopathy; intensive care unit; atrophy; myosin heavy chain; actin; myosin binding proteins; nuclear transcription factors; mRNA; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : The combination of a severe systemic illness, corticosteroids, and neuromuscular blocking agents in patients on the mechanical ventilator often results in a condition known as Acute Quadriplegic Myopathy (AQM). While severe weakness of all spinal nerve innervated muscles is known to be a significant clinical characteristic of the disease, this symptom is typically not recognized until the disease has progressed to an advanced stage. 2. 2. Intensive Care Unit Muscle Wasting : Skeletal Muscle Phenotype and Underlying Molecular Mechanisms

    Author : Sudhakar Reddy Aare; Larsson Lars; Rooyackers Olav; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; acute quadriplegic myopathy; gene expression; myosin; heat shock proteins; mechanical ventilation; myostatin; sepsis; corticosteroids; diaphragm; Clinical Neurophysiology; Klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Acute quadriplegic myopathy (AQM), or critical illness myopathy, is a common debilitating acquired disorder in critically ill intensive care unit (ICU) patients characterized by generalized muscle wasting and weakness of limb and trunk muscles. A preferential loss of the thick filament protein myosin is considered pathognomonic of this disorder, but the myosin loss is observed relatively late during the disease progression. READ MORE

  3. 3. Mechanisms Underlying Intensive Care Unit Muscle Wasting : Intervention Strategies in an Experimental Animal Model and in Intensive Care Unit Patients

    Author : Monica Llano-Diez; Lars Larsson; Marco Sandri; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; acute quadriplegic myopathy; intensive care unit; myosin; regulation of contraction; muscle atrophy; mechanical loading; mobilization; Clinical Neurophysiology; Klinisk neurofysiologi;

    Abstract : Critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) commonly develop severe muscle wasting and weakness and consequently impaired muscle function. This not only delays respirator weaning and ICU discharge, but has deleterious effects on morbidity, mortality, financial costs, and quality of life of survivors. READ MORE

  4. 4. Intensive care Muscle Wasting and Weakness : Underlying Mechanisms, Muscle Specific Differences and a Specific Intervention Strategy

    Author : Guillaume Renaud; Lars Larsson; Oliver Friedrich; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The intensive care unit (ICU) condition, i.e., immobilisation, sedation and mechanical ventilation, often results in severe muscle wasting and weakness as well as a specific acquired myopathy, i.e. READ MORE
