  1. 1. Mitochondrial function in human skeletal muscle: with special reference to exercise and training

    Author : Michail Tonkonogi; Högskolan Dalarna; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : aerobic metabolism; oxidative phosphorylation; mitochondria; oxygen utilisation; citrate synthase; ADP sensitivity; ATP; muscle fibres; hydrogen ions; lactate; free radicals; proton leak; uncoupling; exercise; aerobic metabolism; oxidative phosphorylation; mitochondria; oxygen utilisation; citrate synthase; ADP sensitivity; ATP; muscle fibres; hydrogen ions; lactate; free radicals; proton leak; uncoupling; exercise;

    Abstract : The overall objective of this thesis was to study the adaptation of oxidative function in human skeletal muscle to acute exercise of different modes, intensities and durations, and to endurance training. The effects of endurance training on mitochondrial function were evaluated in cross-sectional and longitudinal studies by measurements of mitochondrial oxygen consumption in isolated mitochondria and permeabilised muscle fibres and measurements of mitochondrial ATP production rate in isolated mitochondria. 2. 2. Left Ventricular Dynamics During Exercise in Endurance Athletes

    Author : Milena Sundstedt; Tommy Jonason; Egil Henriksen; Eva Nylander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Physiology; athletes; exercise; left ventricular dynamics; stroke volume; mitral annular motion; Fysiologi;

    Abstract : Large quantities of data have described left ventricular adaptation to endurance training, but basic concepts on left ventricular performance during exercise remain controversial. In this thesis, we present the results of studies of left ventricular dynamics during exercise in 89 endurance-trained athletes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Consequences of Adaptation for Risk : In Nepal and the Maldives

    Author : Lama Phudoma; Avdelningen för Riskhantering och Samhällssäkerhet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; adaptation; risk; communities; Nepal; Maldives;

    Abstract : Throughout time, communities have adapted to changes in their environment and, in doing so, have addressed risksthat threaten the things they value. The need to adapt is considered more urgent now than ever, notably given thecurrent focus on climate risk. Typically, adaptation is presented as a solution to reduce such risks. READ MORE

  4. 4. Older adults with long-term spinal cord injury

    Author : Sophie Jörgensen; Rehabiliteringsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Rehabilitation; Spinal Cord Injuries; International Classification of Functioning; Disability and Health ICF ; Aging; Depression; Exercise; Activities of Daily Living; Adaptation; Psychological; Sense of Coherence;

    Abstract : As a result of advances in healthcare and rehabilitation, many people with spinal cord injury (SCI) have lived several decades with their injury. Knowledge of living with long-term SCI into older age is limited, despite an increased focus on aging with SCI in research and clinical practice. READ MORE

  5. 5. Challenging Adaptability : Analysing the Governance of Reindeer Husbandry in Sweden
