1. Technology for photonic components in silica/silicon material structure
Abstract : The main objectives of this thesis were to develop a lowtemperature PECVD process suitable for optoelectronicintegration, and to optimize silica glass composition forUV-induced modifications of a refractive index in PECVDfabricated planar devices. The most important achievement isthe successful development of a low temperature silicadeposition, which for the first time makes it is possible tofabricate good quality low loss integrated components whilekeeping the temperature below 250oC during the entirefabrication process. 2. Fabrication and Charaterisation of Photonic Integrated Circuits
Abstract : The past few decades have seen an explosive increase ininformation transfer, fuelled by the enormous growth of theInternet, telecommunication applications, and mass mediasystems in general. Because of the very high bandwidthpotential promised by optical fibre communication technology, the area of all-optical networking has received a great amountof attention. READ MORE

3. Reconfigurable and transparent wavelength division multiplexed optical transport networks
Abstract : This thesis is about reconfigurable and transparentwavelength division multiplexed (WDM) networks.Reconfigurability is used to achieve higher surveillance andthroughput in the network. This is done by wavelength selectiveand independent network elements. These network elements canaccomplish bypass and protection switching ofthe traffic. READ MORE

4. Connections Provisioning Strategies for dynamic WDM networks
Abstract : The size, complexity, and the amount of traffic generation of optical communication networks have dramatically increased over the last decades. Exciting technologies, namely, optical amplifiers, wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical filters have been included in optical networks, in order to fulfill end users appetite for bandwidth. 5. Layered optical networks : implications to switching and transmission
Abstract : With the aim of supporting and enhancing high-capacitycommunication networks, such as telephony, Internet and others, this work has investigated:· transmission gains withtime-slotted optical communication, · performance ofoptical add/drop multiplexers (OADMs) and optical crossconnects(OXCs), · OXC networks serving Internet Protocol(IP)-routers, · packet hop reductions in IP-controlledoptical networks, · a simple optical neighbour discoverymethod, · economics of complementing a client network withan optical express layer.Time-slotting was shown to enable bi-directionaltransmission at the same frequency and multiwavelengthtransmission over dispersion-shifted fibre.
