  1. 21. Lignin Conversion to Value-Added Small-Molecule Chemicals : Towards Integrated Forest Biorefineries

    Author : Omar Y. Abdelaziz; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; aromatic monomers; biorefinery; catalysis; kraft lignin; lignin depolymerization; lignin valorization; microbial conversion; renewable chemicals; techno-economic analysis;

    Abstract : Lignin is the most abundant aromatic biopolymer on Earth and has significant potential as a feedstock for industrial use. Due to its intrinsic heterogeneity and recalcitrance, lignin has been regarded as a low-value side-product in the pulp and paper industry and in second-generation biorefineries. READ MORE

  2. 22. Added value from biomass by broader utilization of fuels and CHP plants

    Author : Christer Gustavsson; Roger Renström; Lars Nilsson; Pål Börjesson; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; biofuels; bioeconomy; pyrolysis; gasification; leaching; Miljö- och energisystem; Environmental and Energy Systems;

    Abstract : The present work, where additional value-creating processes in existing combined heat and power (CHP) structures have been examined, is motivated by a political- and consumer-driven strive towards a bioeconomy and a stagnation for the existing business models in large parts of the CHP sector.The research is based on cases where the integration of flash pyrolysis for co-production of bio-oil, co-gasification for production of fuel gas and synthetic biofuels as well as leaching of extractable fuel components in existing CHP plants have been simulated. 3. 23. Valorization of biomass related substrates into value added chemicals : Hydrogen transfer catalysis

    Author : Nitish Kumar Garg; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biomass; levulinic acid; hydrosilylation; borrowing-hydrogen; N-alkylation;

    Abstract : In the current global scenario, it is evident that global warming and climate change are primarily driven by emissions stemming from the utilization of fossil fuels. Yet, if we look around, most of what we see is made from or linked to fossil fuels and it clearly shows our over-dependency on fossil fuels and hence there is a significant need to develop alternate sources of energy and raw materials to tackle these problems. 4. 24. Opportunity Windows and Added Value of Gentle Remediation Options for Contaminated Land Management

    Author : Paul Drenning; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sustainable and Risk-Based Land Management SRBLM ; Ecosystem services; Soil health; Phytomanagement; Soil functions; Cost-benefit analysis; Gentle remediation options GRO ;

    Abstract : Well-functioning, healthy soils are increasingly recognized as vital to human well-being, but soil contamination impairs the capacity of soils to perform their essential functions and provide humans with ecosystem services (ES). Contaminated land poses risks to human health and the environment, which must be managed, but also constitute an important and underutilized land and soil resource for providing ES in urban areas through phytomanagement with gentle remediation options (GRO) – nature-based solutions using plants, fungi, bacteria, and soil amendments to manage risks at contaminated sites while also improving soil functionality. 5. 25. Value assessment capabilities in early PSS development : a study in the aerospace industry

    Author : Alessandro Bertoni; Christian Kowalkowski; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Funktionella produkter; Functional Product Development; Produktinnovation; Product Innovation;

    Abstract : Providing added value to standalone products by adding services is at the core of product service systems (PSS) offered in manufacturing industries. Providing PSS requires a change not only in the way products are sold, but also in the way they are designed and developed. READ MORE
