  1. 1. Salvage and de novo synthesis of nucleotides in Trypanosoma brucei and mammalian cells

    Author : Artur Fijolek; Lars Thelander; Arne Holmgren; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nucleotides; ribonucleotide reductase; Ara-A; p53R2; Trypanosoma brucei; African sleeping sickness; trypanosomiasis; CTP synthetase; adenosine kinase; acivicin; adenine arabinoside; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : All living cells are dependent on nucleic acids for their survival. The genetic information stored in DNA is translated into functional proteins via a messenger molecule, the ribonucleic acid (RNA). Since DNA and RNA can be considered as polymers of nucleotides (NTPs), balanced pools of NTPs are crucial to nucleic acid synthesis and repair. READ MORE

  2. 2. Bioenergetic aspects of the pancreatic B-cells : with special reference to the concentrations and interconversion of the adenine nucleotides

  3. 3. Phagostimulatory dynamics of adenine nucleotides in mosquitoes : advancing a taste-based delivery method for vector control agents

    Author : Matthew Lukenge; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The mosquitoes Aedes aegypti and Anopheles gambiae are vectors of major medical importance, incriminated in over half a million lives lost annually. While there has been significant focus on understanding the olfaction mechanisms underlying host-seeking in mosquitoes for the development of odour-based control tools, little is known about the mechanisms underlying gustation in blood feeding, the ultimate behaviour in the change of events leading up to disease transmission. 4. 4. Endogenous antioxidants in human skeletal muscle and adaption in energy metabolism : with reference to exercise-training, exercise-related factors and nutrition

    Author : Michael B Svensson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : GSH; urate; Q10; Ubiquinone-10; myoblasts; muscle stem cells; high-intensity exercise; performance; overload training; adenine nucleotides; AMP deaminase; glycogen; carbohydrates.;

    Abstract : The antioxidant homeostasis is determined by a wide array of interacting cellular antioxidants, as well as being influenced by the homeostasis in energy metabolism. Changes in antioxidant homeostasis, as a consequences of altered production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). and/or by changes in the resident levels of antioxidants. READ MORE

  5. 5. Human muscle response to sprint exercise in a gender perspective

    Author : Mona Esbjörnsson Liljedahl; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Anaerobic; Performance; Wingate-test; muscle biopsy; Adenine nucleotides; hormones; glycogen; type I fibres; type II fibres; fast twitch; slow twitch; muscle morphology; men; women; sprint training;

    Abstract : Anaerobic performance, muscle characteristics and acute and chronic response to sprint exercise were studied in physically active healthy women (n=35; age 24) and men (n=38; age 25). The aims of the present study were to: 1) Establish if women possess lower oxidative and glycolytic capacity, higher proportion of type I fibres and smaller type II fibre areas in relation to type I fibre areas in thigh musculature than men.
