  1. 1. Haemophilus influenzae adhesins and the innate immune response

    Author : Elena Ronander; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; inflammation; Haemophilus influenzae; Haemophilus surface fibrils; complement; innate immune response; protein E; respiratory epithelium; adhesins;

    Abstract : Haemophilus influenzae is a human specific Gram-negative respiratory tract pathogen. Encapsulated H. influenzae strains exist in six different serotypes a-f, of which type b (Hib) is the most virulent. Hib is protected by the polysaccharide capsule when invading the blood circulaton and may cause diseases such as meningitis and epiglottitis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Structural and functional studies of streptococcal surface adhesins

    Author : Åsa Nylander; Karina Persson; Maria Selmer; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The oral cavity is home to an array of microorganisms that are associated with dental plaque. Some Gram-positive bacteria are common inhabitants of the oral cavity and in order to colonize such a unique environment adhesion becomes essential and is accomplish by adhesins expressed on the bacterial surface. 3. 3. Helicobacter pylori adhesion and patho-adaptation : the role of BabA and SabA adhesins in persistent infection and chronic inflammation

    Author : Jafar Mahdavi; Henrik Clausen; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : H. pylori; BabA; adhesin; Lewis b; MUC5AC; sialyl-dimeric-Lewis x; chronic inflammation; SabA; Lewis x; LPS; odontologi; Odontology;

    Abstract : Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is a human-specific gastric pathogen which is responsible for a spectrum of diseases ranging from superficial gastritis to gastric and duodenal ulceration, and which is also highly associated with gastric cancer. The pathogenesis of severe gastric disorders caused by H. READ MORE

  4. 4. Structural analyses of carbohydrate receptors for enterotoxins and adhesins of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli

    Author : Dani Zalem; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Carbohydrate recognition; glycosphingolipid; diarrheagenic E. coli; ETEC; heat-labile enterotoxin; colonization factor; AB5 toxins;

    Abstract : Carbohydrate-binding proteins expressed by microbes are key determinants in initiating and sustaining infections that account for millions of deaths each year. This thesis fo- cused on proteins integral to infections instigated by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC); estimated as the largest bacterial cause of diarrhea in the world with hundreds of millions of cases each year. 5. 5. Colonization, persistence and virulence factors in Escherichia coli strains in the human intestinal microflora

    Author : Forough Nowrouzian; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Escherichia coli; large intestine; infant; newborn; bacterial adhesins; hemolysins;

    Abstract : Escherichia coli is a member of the normal intestinal microflora of man and many animals. In this thesis, various aspects of the E. coli colonization pattern were studied, especially the role of so called virulence factors for persistence of E. coli in the gut microflora. READ MORE
