1. Platelet adhesion and P-selectin surface expression
Abstract : Upon injury in a blood vessel, platelets become activated and adbere to prevent blood loss. Activated platelets express adhesion molecules on their surface that also make leukocytes adhere to the injury. One such molecule, which also is expressed on endothelium, is the glycoprotein P-selectin. READ MORE

2. Infection biology of the plant pathogenic fungus Bipolaris sorokiniana
Abstract : Bipolaris sorokiniana is a fungal pathogen causing severe disease mainly in wheat and barley worldwide. In this thesis two aspects of the infection process were investigated: the adhesion mechanism of the fungus and the role of the non-host specific phytotoxin prehelminthosporol (PHL) in the disease. Adhesion of B. READ MORE

3. Interactions between non-polar surfaces in water: Fokus on talc, pitch and surface roughness effects
Abstract : The aim of this thesis work was to gain understanding of the interactions between talc mineral and surfaces, liquids and chemicals relevant for industrial applications, such as pulp and paper. Talc is used in the pulp and paper industry as a filler pigment, in control of pitch (lipophilic extractives) deposits and as a coating pigment. READ MORE

4. Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Lactobacillus from initial adherence to effects on human cells
Abstract : The causative agent of gonorrhoea Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonococcus) colonises the urogenital tract epithelia. The vaginal tract microbiota of healthy females is dominated by Lactobacillus species. In paper I, the ability of lactobacilli to protect cervical cells against gonococcal adherence was investigated. 5. Norovirus, causative agent of winter vomiting disease, exploits several histo-blood group glycans for adhesion
Abstract : Norovirus is recognized as the major cause of outbreaks of gastroenteritis world-wide, yet no vaccines or drugs are available for prevention or treatment of the virus infection. Challenge studies and binding studies using virus-like particles (VLPs) have suggested susceptibility to norovirus infection to be associated with secretor status. READ MORE
