  1. 21. Molecular Interactions in Thin Films of Biopolymers, Colloids and Synthetic Polyelectrolytes

    Author : Johansson Erik; Lars Wågberg; Andreas Fery; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Polyelectrolyte multilayers; Layer-by-Layer assembly; Adhesion; Adsorption; Young s modulus; Mechanical buckling; AFM; JKR; SPAR; QCM-D; SIEBIMM; PAH; PAA; Starch; NFC; Nanocellulose;

    Abstract : The development of the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique has turned out to be an efficient way to physically modify the surface properties of different materials, for example to improve the adhesive interactions between fibers in paper. The main objective of the work described in this thesis was to obtain fundamental data concerning the adhesive properties of wood biopolymers and LbL films, including the mechanical properties of the thin films, in order to shed light on the molecular mechanisms responsible for the adhesion between these materials. 2. 22. Construction of force measuring optical tweezers instrumentation and investigations of biophysical properties of bacterial adhesion organelles

    Author : Magnus Andersson; Ove Axner; Lene Broeng Oddershede; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; optical tweezers; biological physics; unfolding; Escherichia coli; force measurements; energy landscape; dynamic force spectroscopy; manipulation; polymers; pili; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : Optical tweezers are a technique in which microscopic-sized particles, including living cells and bacteria, can be non-intrusively trapped with high accuracy solely using focused light. The technique has therefore become a powerful tool in the field of biophysics. READ MORE

  3. 23. Thiol-Ene/Yne Adhesives for Tissue Fixation

    Author : Viktor Granskog; Michael Malkoch; Philip Messersmith; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fiber- och polymervetenskap; Fibre and Polymer Science;

    Abstract : The utilization of adhesives in surgery has not reached its full potential and research in the field is encouraged by the surgeons’ desire for improved alternatives to today’s tissue fixation strategies. Here, adhesive resins based on thiol-ene coupling (TEC) chemistry or thiol-yne coupling (TYC) chemistry are exploited to develop tissue adhesives that cure fast and on-demand via photoinitiation. 4. 24. Heterogeneous material integration for MEMS

    Author : Fredrik Forsberg; Frank Niklaus; Lina Sarro; KTH; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : This thesis describes heterogeneous integration methods for the fabrication of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). Most MEMS devices reuse the fabrication techniques that are found in the microelectronics integrated circuit industry. This limits the selection of materials and processes that are feasible for the realization of MEMS devices. READ MORE

  5. 25. Towards low-emitting and sustainable particle and fibreboards : Formaldehyde emission test methods and adhesives from biorefinery lignins

    Author : Venla Hemmilä; Stergios Adamopoulos; Luísa Maria Hora Carvalho; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Wood board industry; chamber methods; dynamic microchamber DMC ; bio-based adhesives; lignosulfonates; supercritical water hydrolyzed lignin; crosslinkers; fibreboards; particleboards; Forestry and Wood Technology; Skog och träteknik;

    Abstract : High volumes, fast production speed, and low material costs have been historically the driving factors of the particle- and fibreboard industries. However, in recent years the fossil-fuel dependency and health issues of the formaldehyde-containing adhesives used in the production have gained attention from both legislators and consumers.
