6. Maternal deaths in Mozambique : an audit approach with special reference to adolescence, abortion and violence
Abstract : The main purpose of the present thesis was to elucidate the causes and circumstances that surround maternal deaths occurring in Hospital Central de Maputo (HCM). The specific aims were 1: to identify the major causes of direct and indirect matemal deaths, and by utilizing the audit approach, to address the avoidability aspect in each case, 2: to estimate the contribution of malaria to matemal mortality, 3: to compare the main causes of direct and indirect matemal death in adolescents with those in non-adolescents, and the prevalence of risk factors used in antenatal cards with the intention to identify "high risk pregnancy" among such women, 4: to review pregnancy-related deaths due to injuries in HCM, and to elucidate the contribution of violence (homicide and suicide) to these deaths, 5: to estimate the trends of matemal mortality in a ten year period, with special reference to adolescents, and to compare the contribution of induced abortion to matemal mortality in two periods in which different policies regarding abortion were applied. 7. Adolescent pregnancy and parenthood in Swaziland : quality of care, community support and health care service needs
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to study - from different perspectives - adolescent pregnancy and parenthood in Swaziland. The specific objectives were to: i) explore maternity care practices and support for adolescent mothers during their stay in the maternity unit; ii) study the postpartum support to adolescent mothers and their newborns at home by families, communities and health professionals; iii) explore adolescents' views regarding risky sexual behaviour; iv) explore adolescent boys' views on adolescent pregnancy and parenthood; v) explore health care staff provision of adolescent sexual and reproductive health care services in Swaziland. 8. Domestic violence during pregnancy in Uganda : the social biomedical consequences and the relationship with induced abortion
Abstract : Objectives: The specific objectives were to 1) determine the prevalence and predictors of domestic violence during pregnancy; 2) explore community perceptions of factors associated with domestic violence in Wakiso district of Uganda; 3) explore pregnant adolescents experiences and coping strategies regarding violence; 4) investigate the association between domestic violence, pregnancy intention and induced abortion; and 5) investigate whether domestic violence during pregnancy is associated with obstetric complications (leading to antepartum hospitalization) or low birth weight (LBW) delivery. Methods: Paper I was a cross-sectional study among 379 women attending antenatal clinic in Mulago hospital, Kampala, Uganda, from January to May 2000, to assess risk factors, nature and severity of domestic violence during pregnancy.
