1. Novel Insights into Haematopoietic Stem Cell Regulation and Function
Abstract : The haematopoietic stem cell (HSC) is a somatic stem cell essential for life long haematopoiesis; HSCs have the capability to differentiate into all mature types of blood cells and can also undergo self-renewal to maintain their own numbers. They also have the potential to reconstitute a complete haematopoietic system following HSC transplantation, also known as bone marrow transplantation, which is used to treat many haematopoietic disorders. 2. Identification of Unique Hematopoietic Stem Cell Properties
Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are sufficient and required for life long production of all blood cell lineages. Steady state HSCs are largely quiescent and we demonstrate that the kinetics of HSC cell cycling are slower compared to more committed progenitor cells also during expansion and self-renewal ex vivo and in physiological conditions. 3. Stem cells in the adult heart - 3D culture, isolation of side population cells and search for a stem cell niche
Abstract : Cardiac tissue shows a poor regenerative capacity. From 2003 reports, mostly based on animal models, have showed existence of stem cells also in the heart. Using 14C measurements, a slow but steady turnover of the cardiac cells was shown in humans, around 1%/year. As a source for this regeneration endogenous stem cells have been suggested. READ MORE

4. Hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells and potentials for application in fetal cell replacement therapy
Abstract : Fetal cell replacement therapy or in utero hematopoietic cell transplantation (IUHCT) is proposed as a non-myeloablative alternative to bone marrow transplantation (BMT) for a number of inborn immunologic, hematologic and metabolic disorders. IUHCT represents the method through which variable amounts of natural or genetically modified hematopoietic cells can be transferred to the fetal recipient in hope of correcting the disorder and preventing postnatal permanent organ damage. 5. Adult Stem Cell Plasticity, Hype or Hope?
Abstract : Several studies have reported that bone marrow (BM)-derived stem cells have the capacity to give rise to cells of different type of tissue; an ability termed stem cell plasticity or transdifferentiation. Controversies exist as to how frequent this phenomenon is, or if it may be explained by alternative mechanisms. READ MORE
