16. Regional studies of the optical, chemical and microphysical properties of atmospheric aerosols : Radiative impacts and cloud formation
Abstract : Atmospheric particles are ubiquitous in the Earth’s atmosphere and have potential to influence atmospheric chemistry, visibility, global climate and human health, particularly downwind from major pollution sources. The main objective of this thesis was to investigate questions pertaining to the microphysical, chemical and optical properties of aerosol particles by using in situ data collected during four experiments carried out in different regions of the Northern Hemisphere. 17. Fabrication of Low-Dimensional Structures in III-V Semiconductors
Abstract : The thesis presents studies on the processing technology and the characterization of nanometer-sized and low-dimensional structures in III-V semiconductors. Two major approaches are described: 1) the combination of aerosol technology and plasma etching for the fabrication of quantum dots (QDs) in InP-based materials and 2) the use of high-resolution electron beam lithography and plasma or wet chemical etching to make quantum well wires (QWWs) in both GaAs and InP-based structures. 18. Towards sustainable heavy-duty transportation : Combustion and emissions using renewable fuels in a compression ignition engine
Abstract : Transportation should become sustainable and available to everyone. Currently, transportation accounts for approx. one sixth of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions globally, and heavy-duty trucks are responsible for almost 30% of that. READ MORE

19. Electrosurgical plasma-mediated ablation for application in dermal wound and cartilage debridement - Biochemical, microbiological and clinical effects
Abstract : The state of matter known as plasma has in the latest decades been investigated within different areas of medical treatment. The work presented in this thesis has focused on a specific type of plasma-based electrosurgical treatment modality (Coblation®) and its biochemical, microbiological and clinical effects on treatment of cartilage and of dermal wounds. 20. Isocyanates - methodology for gas and particle generation, sampling and detection
Abstract : Isocyanates are mainly used in the industry for the production of polyurethane (PUR) plastics. Workers are at risk of being exposed during the manufacturing of PUR. During thermal degradation of PUR, isocyanates are released and workers involved in hot work such as fire-fighting, welding etc. may also be exposed. READ MORE
