1. Bacterial Activity and Community Composition in the Rhizosphere. Influence of plant species, root age, nitrogen addition and mycorrhizal status
Abstract : Microbial activity in soil is generally assumed to be limited by carbon availability. The soil closest to roots, the rhizosphere, is therefore a zone of high microbial activity due to carbon containing substances released by the root. In this work short-term effects in the rhizosphere have been the subject of investigation. READ MORE

2. Metabolomics, body composition and fracture
Abstract : In this thesis, I evaluated the impact of pre-centrifugation sample management on the plasma metabolome, providing verification for the protocol used in a study where I applied metabolomics to better understand the role of body composition in fracture occurrence using a large population-based cohort. In paper 1, I applied untargeted liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics analysis to plasma samples (n = 471) from healthy donors to predict and evaluate the effect of pre-centrifugation temperature and delay time on metabolomics data using a combination of random forest and generalized linear models. 3. Biomarkers of vascular function and structure in young healthy adults
Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting the blood vessels in the body. Its pathophysiologic mechanisms involve infiltration of the vessel walls by fatty matter and immune cells. This process is slow, starting in childhood but typically not manifesting as symptomatic disease until late adulthood (after 60 years of age). READ MORE

4. Health Maintenance in Very Old Age : Medical Conditions, Functional Outcome and Nutritional Status
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to provide better understanding of the underlying factors related to health maintenance in very old people, with a focus on medical conditions, functional outcome and nutritional status. Data were gathered from the ELSA 85 project (Elderly in Linköping Screening Assessment). READ MORE

5. Effects of early probiotic supplementation in a pediatric setting : Focus on body composition, metabolism and inflammation
Abstract : We aimed to determine the short- and long-term effects on growth, body composition, metabolic and inflammatory markers following supplementation with the probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei ssp. paracasei F19 (LF19) during weaning. READ MORE
