  1. 1. Self Assembly at the Liquid Air Interface

    Author : Niga Petru; Rutland Mark; Ye Shen; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; VSFS; SFG; interface; crown ethers; ethylene oxides; ionic liquids; fatty acids; domains.; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : The aim of this work is to study the interfacial properties of amphiphilic compounds at the liquid–air interface in an attempt to develop a comprehensive understanding of their orientation as well as the influence of their interaction with the solvent on the interfacial layer properties. Using Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS) as the main tool, the molecular structure of the amphiphilic layer and the amphiphile–solvent relation can be illuminated in great detail – it is arguably the most sensitive surface spectroscopy currently available. 2. 2. Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Studies at the Air-Liquid Interface

    Author : Eric Tyrode; Mark Rutland; Paul Davies; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sum Frequency Generation; SFG; VSFS; surfactant; adsorption; water; surface structure; hydration; surface tension; fluorosurfactants; liquid-air interface; poly ethylene oxide surfactants; surface molecular orientation; acetic acid.; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis the structure and hydration of small organic and amphipilic compounds adsorbed at the air-liquid interface, have been studied using the nonlinear optical technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS). The second order nature of the sum frequency process makes this technique particularly surface sensitive and very suitable for interfacial studies, as molecules at the surface can be distinguished even in the presence of a vast excess of the same molecules in the bulk. 3. 3. Development and validation of a system for the generation, characterization and subsequent air- liquid interface studies of aerosol particles

    Author : Christian Svensson; Ergonomi och aerosolteknologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nanoparticles; aggregates; aerosol; protein interactions; toxicology; dose; air liquid interface;

    Abstract : Exposure to nano-sized and nanostructured aerosol particles with tailored properties are likely to increase in society. Occupational exposure to various kinds of nanostructured aerosol particles such as soot and metal aggregates already exists. READ MORE

  4. 4. Exploring the Surface of Aqueous Solutions : X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy studies using a liquid micro-jet

    Author : Josephina Werner; Olle Björneholm; Ingmar Persson; Daniel Lundberg; Johan Söderström; Hendrik Bluhm; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : The surface behavior of biologically or atmospherically relevant chemical compounds in aqueous solution has been studied using surface-sensitive X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The aim is to provide information on the molecular-scale composition and distribution of solutes in the surface region of aqueous solutions. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ellipsometry studies of liquid interfaces: New methodology and applications

    Author : Jan-Willem Benjamins; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Surface and boundary layery chemistry; Ytkemi; gränsskikt; phospholipids; lactoglobulin; air water; oil water; block copolymers; nonionic surfactants; Brewster angle microscopy; Ellipsometry; adsorption;

    Abstract : Adsorption of several surface active agents, such as nonionics, diblock copolymers, triblock copolymers, proteins and phospholipids at the oil/water and air/water has been studied. In order to be able to do this, a new ellipsometry setup, which utilizes light guides, was developed and tested. READ MORE
