  1. 6. Health effects of air pollution in Iceland : respiratory health in volcanic environments

    Author : Hanne Krage Carlsen; Anna Oudin; Thorarinn Gislason; Kadri Meister; Bertil Forsberg; Gunilla Wieslander; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiratory health; air pollution; volcanic ash; epidemiology; hydrogen sulfide.; Epidemiology; epidemiologi; folkhälsa; Public health;

    Abstract : Air pollution has adverse effects on human health. The respiratory system is the most exposed and short-term changes in air pollution levels have been associated with worsening of asthma symptoms and increased rates of heart attacks and stroke. Air pollution in cities due to traffic is the major concern, as many people are exposed. READ MORE

  2. 7. Air pollution and health – Indicators, trends and impacts

    Author : Henrik Olstrup; Christer Johansson; Christina Ruden; Bertil Forsberg; Alain Le Tertre; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; air pollution; health; measurements; trends; impacts; mortality; NOx; elemental carbon; AQHI; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on some of the limitations and difficulties that exist when it comes to quantifying the human health effects that arise as a result of air pollution exposure. The following four issues are particularly analysed and discussed: 1) The measurement techniques used for carbonaceous particles and their lack of consistency; 2) Do the health risks associated with exposure to PM10 depend on the content of elemental carbon in the aerosol?; 3) Trends in air pollutants and the health effects that arise as a result of changed exposure to the measured pollutants; 4) The associations between the measured concentrations of different air pollutants in Stockholm and the daily number deaths; 5) Air quality indicators and health outcomes as basis for an air quality health index (AQHI). 3. 8. Air pollution and dementia in a low exposure setting : the role of noise, olfaction, and theapoe gene

    Author : John Andersson; Maria Nordin; Anna Oudin; Anna Sundström; Tom Russ; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Air pollution; Road traffic; NOx; dementia; APOE; Alzheimer’s disease; Apolipoprotein E; olfaction; particulate matter; vascular dementia; odor identification; odor detection; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Previous research indicates an association between air pollution exposure, and risk of dementia. Still, a number of factors that may play a role in this association remain to be explored. READ MORE

  4. 9. Governable Air. Studies on the Science and Politics of Air Pollution in Europe

    Author : Martin Letell; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; air pollution; environmental government; science and politics; sociology of expertise;

    Abstract : How are associations between the scientific and the political articulated into the activity of international environmental government? This is the focal point of discussion and empirical observation in this dissertation. How is it possible to analyse such associations as an effect of articulation rather than a tectonic clash between preconstituted social realms? How can one identify moments of association and describe their quality without resorting to some absolute frame of reference? Drawing on poststructuralist discourse theory and actor network theory, the general purpose is to move the analysis of the association between the scientific and the political in the direction of th event rather than explaining any such association by imposing the deus ex machina of social structures supposedly given by defult. 5. 10. Assessing environmental exposures. Air pollution in Scania, southern Sweden

    Author : Ralf Rittner; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; air pollution; dispersion modelling; health impact assessment; emission database; Particulate matter PM ; epidemiology;

    Abstract : Background: The environment where we humans live provides the fundamental requirements we need to survive – food to eat, water to drink, and air to breathe. The quality of these elements has a major impact on human health, as they can contain substances that are detrimental to health. These we call environmental pollutants. READ MORE
