  1. 1. O2 and OH airglow in the mesosphere through the lens of Odin/OSIRIS Infrared Imager

    Author : Anqi Li; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Satellite limb observation; mesospheric ozone; photochemistry; airglow; atmospheric waves; mesosphere;

    Abstract : Observing airglow emissions allows us to explore the chemical composition and dynamics of the upper mesosphere. The Odin satellite has routinely measured O2(a1∆g) and OH Meinel band airglow emissions from 2001 until 2015. In this thesis, the Odin/OSIRIS infrared imager data have been studied in some depth for the first time. READ MORE

  2. 2. The Auroral Large Imaging System : design, operation and scientific results

    Author : Urban Brändström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Space and plasma physics; Aurora; Artificial airglow; HF-pump enhanced airglow; Multistation measurements; Polar Stratospheric clouds; Radio-Induced optical emissions; Spectroscopic imaging observations; Tomography; Rymd- och plasmafysik; Space physics; Rymdfysik; rymdfysik; Space Physics;

    Abstract : The Auroral Large Imaging System (ALIS) was proposed in 1989 by Åke Steen as a joint Scandinavian ground-based nework of automated auroral imaging stations. The primary scientic objective was in the field of auroral physics, but it was soon realised that ALIS could be used in other fields, for example, studies of Polar Stratospheric Clouds (PSC), meteors, as well as other atmospheric phenomena. 3. 3. New perspectives in mesospheric wave dynamics and oxygen photochemistry

    Author : Anqi Li; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; oxygen airglow; mesospheric ozone.; gravity wave; Satellite limb observation;

    Abstract : The mesosphere is the region of the atmosphere between 50km to 100km, where both dynamical and photochemical aspects play important roles for the thermal balance. This thesis focuses on the following three areas for mesospheric studies: wave dynamics, oxygen photochemistry and retrieval using the optimal estimation method. READ MORE

  4. 4. Spectroscopic and kinetic studies of atmospheric oxygen emissions

    Author : Jacek Stegman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The terrestrial night sky spectrum Is dominated by emission features related to oxygen photochemistry. Photodissociation of molecular oxygen, the second most abundant atmospheric constituent Is the most efficient channel for converting solar electromagnetic radiation into chemical energy. READ MORE

  5. 5. Rocket-borne in situ measurements in the middle atmosphere

    Author : Jonas Hedin; Jörg Gumbel; Markus Rapp; Ove Havnes; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : rocket measurements; noctilucent clouds; meteoric smoke; nightglow; mesosphere; aerodynamics; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; atmosfärvetenskap; Atmospheric Sciences;

    Abstract : The Earth's mesosphere and lower thermosphere in the altitude range 50-130 km is a fascinating part of our atmosphere. Complex interactions between radiative, dynamical, microphysical and chemical processes give rise to several prominent phenomena, many of those centred around the mesopause region (80-100 km).
