  1. 1. The hyperosmolar airway : Mechanisms of reduced response to nitric oxide

    Author : Josephine Hjoberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; 8-Br-cyclic GMP; airway epithelium; airway reactivity; airway smooth muscle; amiloride; epithelium derived relaxing factor; furosemide; hyperosmolarity; hypertonic saline; nitric oxide; SNAP; sodium chloride; sodium nitroprusside; superoxide; tracheal perfusion; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Clinical Physiology; klinisk fysiologi;

    Abstract : Inhaled nitric oxide (NO) relaxes smooth muscle of the airways and of pulmonary blood vessels and is used to treat lung diseases where the pulmonary vessels are constricted. NO has also been tested as a bronchodilator in asthmatic patients. READ MORE

  2. 2. Lung mechanics and airway inflammation in murine models of asthma

    Author : Sofia Jonasson; Josephine Hjoberg; Hedenstierna Göran; Carl Persson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; allergic asthma; airway inflammation; murine models; lung mechanics; forced oscillation technique; airway reactivity; deep inhalations; oxidative stress; nitric oxide; glucocorticoids.; Clinical physiology; Klinisk fysiologi; klinisk fysiologi; Clinical Physiology;

    Abstract : Allergic asthma is an inflammatory disease of the airways and is characterized by eosinophilic inflammation and increased airway reactivity. In the studies presented in this thesis, lung mechanics and measurements of airway reactivity were assessed in anaesthetized tracheostomized mice by using an animal ventilator (flexiVent®). 3. 3. Nasal and bronchial airway reactivity in allergic and non allergic airway inflammation

    Author : Karl-Gustav Kölbeck; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Nasal hyperreactivity; airway hyperresponsiveness; Rhinostereometry; organic dust; adhesion molecules; endothelial cells;

    Abstract : In allergic or asthmatic airways disease, upper and lower airways show a uniform eosinophilic inflammation of the mucosa, and bronchial hyperreactivity is a common finding. To study the co- variation of mucosal reactivity in upper and lower airways, histamine challenges of both sites were performed in a group of patients with allergic rhinitis during non-season. 4. 4. Every breath you take every move you make. Studies on Asthma and Sports in Adolescent Athletes

    Author : Kerstin Romberg; allergologi och palliativ medicin Lungmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Adolescence; asthma; airway hyper-reactivity; mannitol provocation; exercise challenge; CC16; gender; life style; quality of life;

    Abstract : Asthma and allergies are common diseases in adolescents and have increased during the last few decades. All elite level sports activities result in increased risk of asthma and rhinitis regardless of sport practised. READ MORE

  5. 5. Nasal mucosal reactivity after long-time exposure to building dampness

    Author : Stig Rudblad; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Indoor environment; histamine provocation; nasal mucosa; mucosal reactivity; rhinostereometry; moisture; Laser-Doppler.;

    Abstract : An association between working and/or residing in damp buildings and respiratory health has been reported in a number of studies. A major limitation has been difficulty in objectively verifying any effects on the mucous membranes of the respiratory tract in order to explain symptoms of irritated eyes, nasal congestion and cough that are often reported by occupants in buildings with indoor air problems.
