  1. 1. Reward-related genes and alcohol dependence

    Author : Sara Landgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alcohol; dependence; reward; smoking; body weight; gene; polymorphism; nAChR; ghrelin; GHS-R1A;

    Abstract : Introduction: The rewarding properties of alcohol are mediated by the brain reward systems, specifically by the cholinergic-dopaminergic reward link, involving both nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) as well as the ghrelin signalling system. The susceptibility for developing alcohol dependence is influenced by genetic factors. READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies on new pharmacological treatments for alcohol dependence - and the importance of objective markers of alcohol consumption

    Author : Andrea deBejczy; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; alcohol dependence; mirtazapine; varenicline; org 25935; alcohol markers; phosphatidylethanol; randomized controlled clinical trials RCT ; treatment; glycine transporter inhibitor; nAChR;

    Abstract : This thesis will guide you through three randomized controlled trials (RCT) on three pharmacotherapies for alcohol dependence; the antidepressant drug mirtazapine, the smoking cessation drug varenicline and the glycine-uptake inhibitor Org 25935. The mirtazapine study was an investigator initiated single-center harm-reduction study with alcohol consumption measured by self-report in a diary as main outcome. READ MORE

  3. 3. Treatment of alcohol dependence in primary care

    Author : Karin Hyland; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Alcohol dependence is a common disorder and contributes to substantial morbidity and mortality globally. Only 10-20 percent engage in treatment, which makes alcohol dependence the mental disorder with the largest treatment gap. Most individuals with alcohol dependence have a dependence of low to moderate severity. READ MORE

  4. 4. Studies of acamprosate for the treatment of alcohol dependence

    Author : Anders Hammarberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Alcohol dependence is a widespread psychiatric disorder with a prevalence of 4-6% in the adult population in western countries. Acamprosate (Calcium acetyl homotaurinate) is approved in many countries as a medication for the treatment of alcohol dependence. READ MORE

  5. 5. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain

    Author : Muhammad Zubair Hussain; Georgy Bakalkin; Anita Hansson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endogenous Opioid System; Dynorphins; Lateralization; Alcohol Dependence; Emotions; Traumatic Brain Injury; Anterior Cingulate Cortex; Dorsal Striatum; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation.The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of  positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain.
