  1. 1. Calcareous Algae of a Tropical Lagoon : Primary Productivity, Calcification and Carbonate Production

    Author : Juma W. Kangwe; Mats Björk; Lena Kautsky; Ian Bryceson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant physiology; Växtfysiologi;

    Abstract : The green algae of the genus Halimeda Lamouroux (Chlorophyta, Bryopsidales) and the encrusting loose-lying red coralline algae (Rhodophyta, Corallinales) known as rhodoliths are abundant and widespread in all oceans. They significantly contribute to primary productivity while alive and production of CaCO3 rich sediment materials on death and decay. READ MORE

  2. 2. Brominated natural products at different trophic levels in the Baltic Sea : Identification of polybrominated dioxins, hydroxylated and methoxylated diphenyl ethers

    Author : Anna Malmvärn; Lillemor Asplund; Åke Bergman; Bert van Bavel; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins; hydroxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers; methoxylated polybrominated diphenyl ethers; Baltic Sea; algae; natural production; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; Environmental Chemistry; miljökemi;

    Abstract : Over time, the Baltic Sea has been contaminated by increasing discharges of pollutants from human activities. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have caused toxic effects in wildlife and excess of nutrients have led to eutrophication. READ MORE

  3. 3. Ecological implications of the production of toxic substances by fish killing phytoplankton species grown under variable N:P-ratios

    Author : Niclas Johansson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; mixotrophy; grazing; allelopathic interactions; allelopathy; algae; phytoplankton; nutrient limitation; toxicity; Toxic haptophytes; fishkilling phytoplankton; Hydrobiology; marine biology; aquatic ecology; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi;

    Abstract : The influence of different nutrient conditions on the production of toxins was studied in certain fishkilling haptophytes (e.g. Prymnesium parvum and Chrysochromulina polylepis). READ MORE

  4. 4. Climate change impacts on production and dynamics of fish populations

    Author : Per Hedström; Pär Byström; Jan Karlsson; Peter Eklöv; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Temperature; terrestrial dissolved organic carbon; light extinction; GPP; recruitment; winter mortality; metabolism; cohort competition; fish production; fish biomass;

    Abstract : Ongoing climate change is predicted to increase water temperatures and export of terrestrial dissolved matter (TDOM) to aquatic ecosystems influencing ecosystem productivity, food web dynamics and production of top consumers. Ecosystem productivity is mainly determined by the rates of primary production (GPP) in turn controlled by nutrients, light availability and temperature, while temperature alone affect vital rates like consumption and metabolic rates and maintenance requirements of consumers. 5. 5. Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton dynamics in a polymictic tropical lake

    Author : Rolf Erikson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biology; tropical lake; algae; bacteria; regulation; dynamics; interaction; Biologi; Biology; Biologi; limnologi; Limnology;

    Abstract : Phytoplankton and bacterioplankton dynamics in lakes are regulated by a multitude of factors such as light, temperature, water column mixing, nutrients, organic substrates, grazing, and food web structure. Tropical lakes are especially interesting to study because of the relative constancy of several of these factors. READ MORE
