  1. 21. The global marine carbon system through time

    Author : Jenny Hieronymus; Jonas Nycander; Gösta Walin; Michael Follows; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; atmosfärvetenskap och oceanografi; Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography;

    Abstract : Carbon dioxide is an important greenhouse gas and in order to understand its effect on the climate we need to identify its sources and sinks. This thesis focuses on different aspects of the marine carbon system and the exchange of carbon between the ocean and the atmosphere. READ MORE

  2. 22. Acidification trends in Swedish lakes : an assessment of past water chemistry conditions using lake sediments

    Author : Tom Korsman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Palaeolimnology; acidification history; alkalization; acid deposition; land-use; lake sediments; near infrared spectroscopy; diatoms; multivariate calibration; Sweden;

    Abstract : This thesis presents temporal perspectives of lake acidification in Sweden. Sediment records have been used to study timing, trends and causes of acidification, and two different techniques for assessing past lake-water acidity are presented. READ MORE

  3. 23. Coagulation process characteristics and pollutant removal from urban runoff

    Author : Fredrik Nyström; Inga Herrmann; Annelie Hedström; Maria Viklander; Michael Cimbritz; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; stormwater; urban snowmelt; road runoff; coagulation flocculation sedimentation; coagulation characteristics; coagulation mechanism; treatment efficiency; VA-teknik; Urban Water Engineering; Centre - Centre for Stormwater Management DRIZZLE ; Centrumbildning - Centrum för dagvattenhantering DRIZZLE ;

    Abstract : Many different stormwater control measures (SCMs) can be implemented in order to mitigate issues with polluted stormwater flows into receiving water bodies.  The treatment function of  SCMs is commonly based on the removal of particles by sedimentation, thereby also removing pollutants associated with particles. 4. 24. An inductive approach to the modeling of lake water quality in dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes

    Author : Tomas K. E. Thierfelder; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Sedimentology; sedimentologi;

    Abstract : To explore the interaction between elements of the watershed and lake water quality, a database large enough to approximate the generic population of dimictic, glacial/boreal lakes is assembled and analyzed with multivariate statistical methods in an inductive top-down approach. Utilizing the analytical capabilities of geographical information systems, the spatially distributed characteristics of land cover, soil and bedrock elements are identified and parameterized with respect to element morphology and hydrology. 5. 25. Mercury and radiocesium in Swedish lakes

    Author : Tord Andersson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Two large, nationwide monitoring data sets were compiled and statistically treated in order to create a national picture of the problems with high contents of mercury (Hg) and radiocesium (137Cs) in fish. Beside these two data sets, 75 lakes in four counties (Västernorrland, Gävleborg, Örebro and Kronoberg) were studied in connection to an evaluation of different measures to decrease the content of Hg and 137Cs in fish.
