  1. 1. Mechanisms of alloxan diabetogenicity

    Author : Kjell Grankvist; Inge-Bert Täljedal; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Alloxan; catalase; experimental diabetes; free radicals; islets of Langerhans; rubidium accumulation; superoxide dismutase; Trypan Blue;

    Abstract : Suspensions of pancreatic islet cells from ob/ob-mice were incubated with Trypan Blue. Microscope photometry showed that apparently viable cells excluded the dye completely, whereas the nuclei of non-viable cells accumulated Trypan Blue by a saturable process. READ MORE

  2. 2. Neogenesis and alloxan toxicity in pancreatic islets, with special reference to the transplanted human β-cell

    Author : Björn Tyrberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Alloxan; β-cell; diabetes; differentiation; growth; insulin secretion; nephrectomy; ob ob; pancreatic islet; transplantation; guinea-pig human; mouse; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The aim of this work was to study whether adult human pancreatic β-cells have the capacity to proliferate in culture and after transplantation to the renal subcapsular space of mice. An immunosuppressive regimen for human islet discordant xenotransplantation to mice was designed. READ MORE

  3. 3. Salivary glands and oral lesions in diabetes mellitus : an experimental and clinical study with special reference to the influence of metabolic control and duration of the disease

    Author : Carl-Olof Reuterving; Erik Hägg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetes mellitus; salivation; salivary glucose; saliva; submandibular gland; pilocarpine; root surface caries; periodontal disease; alloxan; feeding behavior; rats; humans;

    Abstract : Diabetes mellitus is associated with several clinically significant abnormalities in the oral cavity and salivary glands, the most common being periodontitis, salivary gland enlargement and a sensation of dry mouth. The prevalence of dental caries in diabetics is mostly reported to be decreased or unaffected. READ MORE

  4. 4. Alloxan Toxicity to macrophages and Insulinoma Cells

    Author : Hong Zhang; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Alloxan induces damage and death of pancreatic islet B-cells in severalexperimental animal models, thus causing insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM or type I diabetes). This unique cytotoxicity of alloxan has been studied for more than fifty years. READ MORE

  5. 5. On the pathogenesis of glomerular lesions in the alloxan diabetic rat : a light microscopic, immunofluorescent and ultrastructural study, including the effects of insulin treatment and immunosuppression
