  1. 6. Sex and symbionts : New discoveries in local and regional patterns of coral ecology and reproduction

    Author : Micaela Hellström; Michael Tedengren; Mats Grahn; John A. H. Benzie; Nancy Knowlton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Indo-Pacific; S. elegans; G. fascicularis; Symbiodinium; size; reproduction; allozymes; ITS2; mtDNA; geography; environment; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Coral reefs belong to the most diverse and the most threatened ecosystems on earth. Anthropogenic stressors and climate change have led to mortalities at levels unprecedented in modern times. The aims of this thesis are to investigate aspects of the corals’ ability to reproduce, disperse, adapt and survive. READ MORE

  2. 7. Phenotypic plasticity and local adaptation in tadpoles

    Author : Björn Lardner; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; salinity tolerance; trade-off; life-history; tail depth; inducible defence; antipredator strategies; tadpoles; anurans; amphibians; Phenotypic plasticity; local adaptation; competitive ability; allozymes.; Animal ecology; Djurekologi;

    Abstract : Amphibian larvae are plastic in many traits. Can plasticity buffer population divergence, so that local adaptation is more common in non-plastic traits? I argue that this may be the case for adaptive plastic responses. READ MORE

  3. 8. Geographic Variation, Hybridization and Evolution in the Bladder Campions, Silene vulgaris and S. uniflora (Caryophyllaceae)

    Author : Eva Månsby; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; chemotaxonomy. Physiology of nonvascular plants; Systematisk botanik; Växtgenetik; Systematic botany; taxonomy; morphology; phytogeography; Plant genetics; Paternal effects; Seed polymorphism; Ecology; Ekologi; Crossing barriers; cpDNA markers; Genetic variation; Hybridization; Post-glacial migration; Allozymes; Silene vulgaris; Silene uniflora; taxonomi; morfologi; kemotaxonomi. Växters fysiologi inte kärlväxter .;

    Abstract : In the present thesis, I investigated the inter- and intraspecific variation in the Silene vulgaris/uniflora species-complex (the bladder campions). I have focused on the effects of past and present hybridization both on a large scale ? over the whole of Europe ? and on a local scale. Silene vulgaris and S. READ MORE

  4. 9. Genetic variation and sexual reproduction in a moss with dwarf males, Homalothecium lutescens

    Author : Frida Rosengren; Biodiversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; bryophytes; mosses; dwarf males; sexual reproduction; genetic variation; genetic structure; inbreeding; isozymes; allozymes; SNP; sporophytes; spore; fertilization; fertility;

    Abstract : Dwarf males occur in many unrelated groups of organisms. Among land plants they are unique to mosses. Moss dwarf males originate from male spores that land and germinate on the female where their final size is restricted to a few mm. Fertilization in mosses occur over short distances with swimming spermatozoids. READ MORE

  5. 10. Geographic Distribution of Intra-specific Variation in Widespread Eurasian boreo-nemoral Woodland Herbs

    Author : Torbjörn Tyler; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; kemotaxonomi. Växters fysiologi inte kärlväxter .; Plant genetics; Växtgenetik; morfologi; chemotaxonomy. Physiology of nonvascular plants; Systematisk botanik; taxonomi; phytogeography; morphology; taxonomy; historical biogeography; Systematic botany; allozymes; population differentiation; postglacial migration; genetic variation; geographic variation;

    Abstract : Many woodland plant species have huge distribution areas covering large parts of the Eurasian continent including areas that were glaciated during the last glacial period. In the present thesis, the geographic distribution of variation within such species is investigated and discussed in relation to glacial survival and post-glacial migration, dispersal ability, breeding system and levels of gene-flow between populations and related species, and various methods to measure and analyse genetic variation.
