  1. 1. Notch Signaling in Human Neuroblastoma Cells

    Author : Marie Stockhausen; Institutionen för translationell medicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; oncology; Hes-1; Medicin människa och djur ; Medicine human and vertebrates ; hypoxia; TGF-alpha; EGFR; ERK1 2; Ras MAPK; differentiation; valproic acid; ubiquilin-1; neuroblastoma; Hash-1; Cytologi; onkologi; cancer; cancerology; Cytology; Notch;

    Abstract : Neuroblastoma is a childhood tumor derived from the sympathetic nervous system (SNS). It is believed that the tumors arise from cells halted in their differentiation and due to their immature phenotype; they express proteins normally only detected during embryogenesis. One such protein is Hash-1, which is required for formation of the SNS. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia

    Author : Camilla Halvarsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Mikael Sigvardsson; Kamil Kranc; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis. 3. 3. The effect of alpha-HGA on HIV-1 replication

    Author : Masoud Youssefi; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HIV-1; p24; capsid formation; alpha-HGA; antiretroviral; uptake;

    Abstract : Different classes of anti HIV-1 drugs are now available for treatment of HIV-1 infection. Although improved, these drugs show adverse effects and their long-term efficiency is severely hampered by the emergence of resistant viruses. Therefore, less toxic and more effective anti HIV-1 therapeutics agents are still needed. READ MORE

  4. 4. Molecular characterization and evolution of alpha-actinin : from protozoa to vertebrates

    Author : Ana Virel; Lars Backman; Kristina Djinovic-Carugo; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; alpha-actinin; evolution; spectrin repeat; intragene duplication; phylogenetic tree; spectrin superfamily; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : alpha-actinin is a ubiquitous protein found in most eukaryotic organisms. The ability to form dimers allows alpha-actinin to cross-link actin in different structures. In muscle cells alpha-actinin is found at the Z-disk of sarcomeres. READ MORE

  5. 5. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (PiZ): Clinical studies with special regard to hepatic and vasculitic disorders

    Author : Abdul-Nasser Elzouki; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Gastro-enterology; systemic vasculitis; small-vessel vasculitis; serpins; genetic hemochromatosis; chronic hepatitis C; chronic liver disease; Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency; alpha-1-antichymotrypsin deficiency; Gastroenterologi; Urology; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : Homozygous alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT)deficiency (PiZZ) is known to predispose to emphysema and chronic liver disease (CLD). The overall aim of the studies upon which this thesis is based was to investigate extra-pulmonary disease manifestations of AAT deficiency with special reference to hepatic and vasculitic disorders.
