  1. 1. Studies of neuropeptides in pancreatic beta cell function with special emphasis on islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP)

    Author : Ella Karlsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; alpha cell; amylin; beta cell; chromogranin; growth; IAPP; insulin; islet amyloid polypeptide; leptin; NOD mice; pancreastatin; pancreatic islet; proliferation; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The presence of protein amyloid in pancreas and its association to diabetes was first described 100 years ago in 1901, but was not identified as Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP) until 1986. The aim of the present work was to determine the role of the beta cell hormone, IAPP, in normal pancreatic islet physiology and during early disturbances of islet function. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cellular targets of HAMLET, their role in tumor cell death and therapeutic potential

    Author : Aftab Nadeem; immunologi och glykobiologi - MIG Avdelningen för mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cancer therapy; colon cancer; bladder cancer; cell death; HAMLET; alpha-lactalbumin; oleate; membrane lipids; nucleotide-binding protein; Ras GTPases; alpha-helical peptides;

    Abstract : Protein-lipid complexes have broad and specific effects against cancers of different origins. HAMLET (Human Alpha-lactalbumin Made LEthal to Tumor cells) is a complex of partially unfolded α-lactalbumin and oleic acid that kills a wide range of tumor cells but leaves healthy differentiated cells unaffected. 3. 3. Adhesion Dependent Signals : Cell Survival, Receptor Crosstalk and Mechanostimulation

    Author : Anjum Riaz; Staffan Johansson; Bengt Hallberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Integrins; Signal transduction; Protein kinase B; Akt; PI3K; Heparanase; ROS; Mechanosignalling; Molekylär cellbiologi; Molecular Cellbiology; Biology with specialization in Molecular Cell Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylär cellbiologi; Cellforskning; Cell Research;

    Abstract : The integrin family of cell surface receptors is evolutionary conserved and found in all multicellular animals. In humans 8-alpha and 18-beta integrins are non-covalently associated into 24 dimers. Integrins mediate cell-extracellular matrix and cell-cell interactions and participate in cell signalling. 4. 4. The Role of Microvascular Pericytes in the Generation of Pro-fibrotic Connective Tissue Cells : Investigations in vitro and in Reactive Tissues in vivo

    Author : Jakob Karén; Christian Sundberg; Gunilla Westergren-Thorsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pericyte fibroblast differentiation fibrosis; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Microbiology; Mikrobiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; Medical Biochemistry; Medicinsk biokemi; Cellforskning; Cell Research; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Pericytes are cells of mesenchymal origin located on the abluminal side, juxtapositioned to the endothelial cells in capillaries, venules and small arterioles. They are important for maintaining vessel integrity in resting tissues as well as the formation and stabilization of new vessels. READ MORE

  5. 5. Studies of transforming growth factor alpha in normal and abnormal growth

    Author : Anna-Lotta Hallbeck; Åke Wasteson; Thomas Walz; Annelie Lindström; Carl-Henric Heldin; Linköpings universitet; []
