  1. 6. Microencapsulation of Pancreatic Islets : A Non-Vascularised Transplantation Model

    Author : Sara Bohman; Arne Andersson; Aileen King; Stellan Sandler; Eduard Montanya; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microencapsulation; Islet transplantation; revascularisation; alpha-cell; exendin-4; islet amyloid; Cell biology; Cellbiologi;

    Abstract : Transplantation of pancreatic islets is a potential treatment of type 1 diabetes that aims to restore normal blood glucose control. By encapsulating the islets in alginate, they can be protected from rejection. READ MORE

  2. 7. Prevention of type 1 diabetes mellitus in experimental studies

    Author : Maria Holstad; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell biology; Cytokines; inducible nitric oxide synthase; nitric oxide; NOD mice; pancreatic islets; prolactin; syngeneic islet transplantation; tumour necrosis factor alpha; type 1 diabetes mellitus; Cellbiologi; Cell biology; Cellbiologi; medicinsk cellbiologi; Medical Cell Biology;

    Abstract : The aim of the study was to examine the immune response and different immunoprotective strategies in experimental type 1 diabetes mellitus. The autoimmune destruction of the insulin-producing pancreatic β-cells that leads to type 1 diabetes is complex and incompletely understood. READ MORE

  3. 8. Neuron-to-neuron propagation of neurodegenerative proteins; relation to degradative systems

    Author : Jakob Domert; Martin Hallbeck; Jan Marcusson; Lars Tjernberg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cell-to-cell transfer; beta-amyloid; Alzheimer s disease; degradation; proteasome; alpha-synuclein; Parkinson s disease; high throughput screening model;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) are defined by neurodegeneration and accumulations of misfolded proteins that spread through the brain in a well characterized manner. In AD these accumulations consist mainly of β-amyloid (Aβ) and tau, while in PD, α-synuclein (α-syn) make up the characteristic lewy pathology. READ MORE

  4. 9. Cardiac cell identification and isolation

    Author : Laura Tarnawski; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Identification and isolation of cardiomyocytes from the heart, embryonic stem cells, or induced pluripotent stem cells is a challenging task and will require specific isolation techniques. Less than 30% of the cells within the murine heart are cardiomyocytes and, what is more, there are multiple sub-populations of cardiomyocytes like atrial, ventricular and conduction system cardiomyocytes. 5. 10. Hypoxia inducible factor 1 alpha : dependent and independent regulation of hematopoietic stem cells and leukemia

    Author : Camilla Halvarsson; Jan-Ingvar Jönsson; Mikael Sigvardsson; Kamil Kranc; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : This thesis has studied the role of low oxygen levels, or hypoxia, in hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) and how, at the molecular level, it regulates stem cell maintenance and protects against oxidative stress induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). HSCs reside within the bone marrow in specific niches created by a unique vascularized environment, which is suggested to be hypoxic and crucial for HSCs by maintaining a quiescent state of cell cycle and by redirecting metabolism away from the mitochondria to glycolysis.
