1. Alpha-1-microglobulin: Innate defence against pathological oxidation
Abstract : Oxidative stress has been implicated as an important factor in the progression of many diseases. An imbalance in the redox-system may cause oxidation of cells and molecules, which might subsequently lead to tissue damage. READ MORE

2. Structure and distribution of alpha-1-microglobulin proteins
Abstract : This thesis describes studies of the structure and tissue distribution of alpha-1-microglobulin (a1-m), a member of the lipocalin protein superfamily with immunosuppressive properies. It was shown that a1-m appears in human plasma in five major forms. READ MORE

3. Alpha-1-microglobulin, heme-binding protein, reductase and antioxidant
Abstract : This thesis describes structural and functional studies of alpha-1-microglobulin (a1m), a 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein that is evolutionarily well-conserved and belongs to the lipocalin superfamily. The lipocalins are polypeptides of 160-190-amino acids that are folded into an 8-stranded beta-barrel forming a pocket with a hydrophobic interior. READ MORE

4. Alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (PiZ): Clinical studies with special regard to hepatic and vasculitic disorders
Abstract : Homozygous alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT)deficiency (PiZZ) is known to predispose to emphysema and chronic liver disease (CLD). The overall aim of the studies upon which this thesis is based was to investigate extra-pulmonary disease manifestations of AAT deficiency with special reference to hepatic and vasculitic disorders. 5. Severe and moderate alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency at the age of 30
Abstract : Alpha-1-antitrypsin (AAT) is a glycoprotein synthesised in the liver. Its main role is to protect lung tissue from destruction by neutrophil elastase. In severe (PiZZ) AAT deficiency, there is an increased risk of emphysema, especially in smokers. READ MORE
