  2. 2. Psychobiological functioning in mid-adolescent girls and boys : Linkages to self reported stress, self-esteem and recurrent pain

    Author : Lisa Folkesson Hellstadius; Petra Lindfors; Laura Ferrer-Wreder; Roger Persson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Adolescents; Cortisol; Alpha-amylase; Stress; Self-esteem; Recurrent pain; Psychology; psykologi;

    Abstract : Among adolescents, the day-to-day functioning of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal-axis (HPA-axis) and of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and their relationships with stress, subjective health complaints and psychological factors such as self-esteem, studied in naturalistic settings, have been largely unexplored. This thesis aimed to investigate the diurnal activity of the HPA-axis (Studies I & II) in terms of salivary cortisol and the ANS/SNS system (Study III) in terms of salivary alpha-amylase (sAA) in mid-adolescent girls and boys. 3. 3. An alkaline active maltooligosaccharide forming alpha-amylase from Bacillus halodurans

    Author : Suhaila Hashim; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Biokemisk teknik; Biochemical technology; differential scanning calorimetry; soda lakes; Bacillus halodurans; alkaliphile; á-amylase;

    Abstract : The East African Rift Valley contains a number of soda lakes, which represent some of the most stable, naturally occurring alkaline environments on earth. Alkaliphilic microorganisms found in these habitats have attracted a great interest due to their ability to produce extracellular enzymes that are active and stable at high pH values for industrial applications. Abstract : Soda lakes represent the most stable naturally-occurring alkaline environments on Earth and harbour a diverse population of alkaliphiles. Alkaliphilic microorganisms have attracted a great interest due to their ability to produce extracellular enzymes that are active and stable at high pH values. READ MORE

  5. 5. Icodextrin metabolism in peritoneal dialysis : clinical and experimental studies

    Author : Elvia García López; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Peritoneal dialysis; icodextrin; icodextrin metabolites; ultrafiltration; alphaarnylase activity; gel-filtration HPLC;

    Abstract : Icodextrin (ICO, or polyglucose) is an effective osmotic agent for peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients (pts). ICO is a soluble polymeric form of glucose with an average molecular 'weight range from 13,000 to 19,000 dalton. Glucose is absorbed from the peritoneal cavity by diffusion. READ MORE
