  1. 1. POLYPEPTIDES - STRUCTURES AND INTERACTIONS IN MONOLAYERS AND AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

    Author : Helen Sjögren; Fysikalisk kemi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Physical chemistry; Fysikalisk kemi; tyrosine ; co-poly-L lysine; phenylalanine ; co-poly-L- lysine; poly-L-glutamate; poly-L-lysine; poly-L-valine; poly-L-isoleucine; poly-gamma-methyl-L-glutamate; poly-L-leucine; monolayer; Langmuir-Blodgett film; CD spectroscopy; random coil; alpha-helix; surfactant stabilisation; polypeptide; polyamino acid;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis work is to understand and be able to control polypeptide conformation and interactions at interfaces and in solution by changing the solution conditions. For this purpose simple model polypeptides, so-called polyamino acids, have been investigated at the air-liquid interface, as well as in aqueous solutions. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hydrophobicity Patterns in Protein Folding

    Author : Frank Potthast; Beräkningsbiologi och biologisk fysik - Genomgår omorganisation; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; global optimization; multisequence; Fourier analysis; hydrophobicity; protein folding; simulated tempering; statistical physics; thermodynamics; Matematisk och allmän teoretisk fysik; kvantmekanik; klassisk mekanik; gravitation; relativitet; termodynamik; statistisk fysik; alpha-helix; protein design.; Mathematical and general theoretical physics; quantum mechanics; classical mechanics; relativity; Fysicumarkivet A:1998:Potthast;

    Abstract : The protein folding problem is addressed focussing on the hydro- phobicity patterns in the amino acid sequences and structures. Both real and model proteins are investigated. The hydrophobicity pattern of real proteins is probed in two ways. First, it is asked which binary pattern is most conserved within groups of related proteins. READ MORE

  3. 3. Dynamics of the voltage-sensor domain in voltage-gated ion channels : Studies on helical content and hydrophobic barriers within voltage-sensor domains

    Author : Christine S. Schwaiger; Erik Lindahl; Lynn Kamerlin; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; activation; deactivation; inactivation; voltage-sensor; VSD; Kv1.2- 2.1; F233; hydrophobic barrier; alpha-helix; 3 10 -helix; Biological physics; Biologisk fysik;

    Abstract : Voltage-gated ion channels play fundamental roles in neural excitability and thus dysfunctional channels can cause disease. Understanding how the voltage-sensor of these channels activate and inactivate could potentially be useful in future drug design of compounds targeting neuronal excitability. READ MORE

  4. 4. Environmental influence on alpha-helical peptides

    Author : Ana Caballero Herrera; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MD alpha helix; C-peptide; membrane proteins; hydrogen bonds; packing; dynamics;

    Abstract : Most proteins at physiological conditions fold into a native functional three-dimensional conformation. The stability of the Native state is a balance between different interactions within the protein and with the solvent. READ MORE

  5. 5. The conserved methionines in the chloroplast small heat shock protein - Role in chaperone-substrate interactions and effects of methionine sulfoxidation on chaperone activity

    Author : Niklas Gustavsson; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metabolism; Biochemistry; oxidative stress; thermostability; temperature stress; stress tolerance; sHsp; protein aggregation; molecular chaperone; Heat stress; methionine sulfoxidation; Biokemi; metabolism; Plant biochemistry; Växtbiokemi;

    Abstract : The chloroplast-localized small heat shock protein (sHsp) Hsp21 belongs to the family of alpha-crystallin like sHsps which form large oligomeric structures and protect partly unfolded aggregation-prone proteins against aggregation. The main focus for this thesis has been on the highly conserved methionines in Hsp21. READ MORE
