  1. 1. Effects of herbivory on arctic and alpine vegetation

    Author : Åsa Lindgren; Ove Eriksson; Jon Moen; Anders Angerbjörn; Ingibjörg S Jónsdóttir; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; herbivory; reindeer; rodents; functional traits; plant species composition; arctic; alpine; tundra; seed limitation; Carex bigelowii; Biology; Biologi; Plant Ecology; växtekologi;

    Abstract : The distribution of plant species and functional traits in alpine and arctic environments are determined by abiotic conditions, but also by biotic interactions. In this thesis, I investigate interactions among plants and herbivory effects on plant community composition and plant functional traits in three different regions: Swedish Lapland, Beringia (USA/Russia) and Finnmark (Norway). 2. 2. The zoo-geomorphological impact of fossorial rodents in sub-polar alpine environments

    Author : Bert Eriksson; Jan Boelhowers; John Östh; Hanna Ridefelt; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; zoo-geomorphology; fossorial rodents; sub-polar; alpine; geomorphic work; ecosystem engineers; Physical geography; Naturgeografi; Geography; Geografi;

    Abstract : The geomorphological impact of small fossorial mammals (adapted to digging and living underground), such as rodents can be significant, and both their direct and indirect effects may contribute to landscape formation. This thesis is based on empirical field studies of two burrowing rodent species in sub-polar environments, namely invasive House mice (Mus musculus) on sub-Antarctic Marion Island and Norwegian lemmings (Lemmus lemmus) in sub-Arctic Abisko. 3. 3. Holocene vegetation dynamics and climate changes in the Torneträsk area, northern Sweden

    Author : Lena Barnekow; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; Palaeobotany; northern Sweden; Torneträsk; Abisko; lake-level; radiocarbon dating; forest history; Holocene; tree-line; climate; Vegetation; fylogeni; palynologi; Physical geography; geomorphology; pedology; cartography; climatology; Fysisk geografi; geomorfologi; marklära; kartografi; klimatologi;

    Abstract : The aim of this study was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetation history and the climate changes in a subarctic area. The results are based on pollen and macrofossil records from six lakes in the Torneträsk area. The lakes are situated at altitudes between 370 and 999 m a.s. READ MORE

  4. 4. Mosses as mediators of climate change : implications for tree seedling establishment in the tundra

    Author : Signe Lett; Ellen Dorrepaal; David Wardle; Marie-Charlotte Nilsson; Vigdis Vandvik; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; arctic; alpine; B. pubescens; bryophytes; competition; facilitation; mosses; P. sylvestris; precipitation changes; seedlings; traits; tree line; warming;

    Abstract : Alpine and arctic tree line expansion depends on the establishment of tree seedlings above the current tree line, which is expected to occur with climate warming. However, tree lines often fail to respond to higher temperatures. Other environmental factors are therefore likely important for tree seedling establishment. READ MORE

  5. 5. Tree-limit ecotonal response to Holocene climate change in the Scandes Mountains of west-central Sweden

    Author : Jonas Bergman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tree-limit ecotone; alpine vegetation; tephrochronology; peat humification; plant macrofossils; Palaeobotany; fylogeni; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; palynologi; Geologi; Geology; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; klimatologi; geomorfologi; climatology; Fysisk geografi; cartography; Holocene climate; palaeoecology; marklära; kartografi; pollen influx;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetational and climatic development in the Sylarna-Storulvån area, western Jämtland, in the central Scandes Mountains. Temporal trends and fluctuations in the elevation and vegetational character of the tree-limit ecotone were studied mainly by means of pollen and plant macrofossil analysis of two lake sediment sequences (Lakes Stentjärn and Spåime), located above the present-day tree-limit.
