  1. 11. Pattern and process in Alpine communities of the Northwestern Caucasus

    Author : Galina A. Pokarzhevskaya; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ecology; biodiversity; life forms; life-history strategy; microtopography; snowbedcommunities; snow melting gradient; tussock; vegetative mobility; Ekologi; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany;

    Abstract : Patterns in vegetation reflect certain processes affecting plant communities. The present work aims at describing patterns and revealing mechanisms operating in alpine vegetation belonging to four vegetation types: alpine lichen heaths, Festuca varia grasslands, Geranium-Hedysarum meadows and snowbed communities. 2. 12. Experimental test setups and simulations in skiing mechanics

    Author : Mikael Swarén; Anders Eriksson; Thomas Stöggl; KTH; []
    Keywords : sports equipment; test methods; sports mechanics; alpine skiing; cross-country skiing; poles; helmets; glide; performance;

    Abstract : Product testing and development are essential parts in sports and for the athletes in their quest to reach the podium. Manufacturers of sports equipment often use basic test methods which do not test the equipment in a sports specific way. READ MORE

  5. 15. Tree-limit ecotonal response to Holocene climate change in the Scandes Mountains of west-central Sweden

    Author : Jonas Bergman; Kvartärgeologi; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; tree-limit ecotone; alpine vegetation; tephrochronology; peat humification; plant macrofossils; Palaeobotany; fylogeni; Paleobotanik; palynology; phylogeny; palynologi; Geologi; Geology; pedology; geomorphology; Physical geography; klimatologi; geomorfologi; climatology; Fysisk geografi; cartography; Holocene climate; palaeoecology; marklära; kartografi; pollen influx;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to reconstruct the Holocene vegetational and climatic development in the Sylarna-Storulvån area, western Jämtland, in the central Scandes Mountains. Temporal trends and fluctuations in the elevation and vegetational character of the tree-limit ecotone were studied mainly by means of pollen and plant macrofossil analysis of two lake sediment sequences (Lakes Stentjärn and Spåime), located above the present-day tree-limit.
