  1. 1. Role of plants in treating metal-polluted waters in wetlands

    Author : Johanna Nyquist; Maria Greger; Hans Brix; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; treatment wetlands; stormwater; AMD; metal uptake; wetland plants; Biology; Biologi; växtfysiologi; Plant Physiology;

    Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of wetland plants in wetland treatment of metal-polluted waters. The specific aims were to investigate metal uptake in various wetland plant species; whether and how wetland plants tolerate high metal concentrations in their immediate surroundings, and how the pH and metal concentrations of polluted waters influence metal uptake in wetland plants were also investigated. 2. 2. Co-disposal of waste rock and lignite fly ash to mitigate the environmental impact of coal mining

    Author : Asif Qureshi; Björn Öhlander; Christian Maurice; Thomas Pabst; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acid mine drainage AMD ; coal mine waste rocks; coal fly ash; co-disposal; mixing blending; dry-cover; prevention neutralisation; Tillämpad geokemi; Applied Geochemistry;

    Abstract : Waste rocks (WRs) from coal mining and fly ash (FA) from coal combustion were studied to determine the potential of the WRs to generate AMD, FAs to neutralise it and estimate their impacts on environment. The ultimate goal was to develop a methodology based on co-disposal to mitigate the environmental problems associated to both wastes. READ MORE

  3. 3. Uveal melanoma and macular degeneration : molecular biology and potential therapeutic applications

    Author : Mario A Economou; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Uveal melanoma; exudative AMD; IGF-1R; c-Met; prognostic markers; metastasis; oral treatment; VEGF;

    Abstract : Uveal melanoma is the most common primary intraocular malignant tumor in adults with 30% to 50% of patients that ultimately succumb to metastatic disease, mainly to the liver. Although new diagnostic and therapeutic tools have been developed during the most recent years, only the eye conservation rate has been achieved, while the survival rate remains poor. READ MORE

  4. 4. Clinical investigations of fixation stability and reading eye movements

    Author : Fredrik Källmark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope SLO ; Tobii Eye-tracker; reading speed; reading eye movements; fixation; regression; saccades; AMD; Lucentis.;

    Abstract : Reading and writing plays a fundamental role in our culture. Compared with, e.g. speech, written language has an immense impact as it offers the possibility to share information over unprecedented distance in time and space. READ MORE

  5. 5. Choroidal neovascularization (CNV) : clinical and experimental aspects

    Author : Lennart Berglin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : CNV; angiogenesis; age-related macular degeneration; AMD; aging; surgery; endothelial cells; VEGF; MMP; TIMP; MMP-2; immunohistochemistry; ECM; RPE; Bruch s membrane; wound healing; inflammation; macrophages; in-situ hybridization; mRNA; immature vessels; MMP-9; TIMP- 3; MMP-2 deficiency;

    Abstract : This work comprises different aspects of choroidal neovacularization (CNV); a leading cause of visual loss in the aged. It is an example of angiogenesis and a complication of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) The purpose was to study if patient age influences outcome of CNV surgery, to characterize the cellular content of CNV, to analyze the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and various matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and their inhibitors (TIMP) in CNV and to study if MMP-2 influences experimental CNV growth.
