11. Conditional and non-conditional reward-related responses to alcohol. Nicotinic mechanisms
Abstract : The mesolimbic dopamine system is believed to mediate the positive reinforcing and rewarding effects of addictive drugs by increasing dopamine levels in its terminal area, the nucleus accumbens (nAc). Nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) within this system appear important for the pharmacological actions of both alcohol and nicotine, which may explain the frequent co-abuse of these two drugs. 12. Epoxides as Contact Allergens - Formation, Sensitising Potency and Structure-Activity Relationships
Abstract : Chemicals in our environment with which we have repeated skin contact can cause skin sensitisation (contact allergy). To trigger an immune response a compound (hapten) must be able to penetrate the skin, where it needs to be reactive enough to bind to proteins and form immunogenic complexes that are recognised as foreign. 13. Development of New Chiral Bicyclic Ligands : Applications in Catalytic Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation, Epoxidations, and Epoxide Rearrangements
Abstract : This thesis describes the synthesis and application of new chiral bicyclic ligands and their application in asymmetric catalysis. The studies involved: [i] The development of novel chiral bicyclic amino sulfur ligands and their use in transfer hydrogenation. READ MORE

14. Valorisation of Renewable Building Blocks via Transition Metal Catalysis – Glycerol- and Amino Acid Derived Compounds in Hydrogen Borrowing and RuAAC Reactions
Abstract : To a large extent, organic building blocks are today obtained from petroleum-based products. From an environmental point of view, biomass-derived compounds are more sustainable alternatives to such oil-derived molecules. The 12 principles of green chemistry describe how chemical processes can be improved in terms of sustainability. READ MORE

15. Homogeneous and heterogeneous Cp*Ir(III) catalytic systems : Mechanistic studies of redox processes catalyzed by bifunctional iridium complexes, and synthesis of iridium-functionalized MOFs
Abstract : The purpose of this doctoral thesis is to investigate and develop catalytic processes mediated by iridium(III) complexes. By understanding the mechanisms, the weaknesses of the designed catalysts can be identified and be overcome in the following generation. READ MORE
