16. On Fusidic Acid Resistance in Staphylococcus Aureus
Abstract : Controlling bacterial infections with antibiotics is central to modern health care. However, increasing bacterial resistance to antibiotics threatens effective therapy. This thesis concerns the use of the antibiotic fusidic acid, and novel analogues of fusidic acid, to treat topical infections caused by the bacterial pathogen Staphylococcu aureus. READ MORE

17. Data-Driven Methods for Surveillance and Diagnostics of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria
Abstract : Antimicrobial resistance is a rapidly growing challenge for the healthcare sector and multi-drug resistant bacterial infections are the cause of nearly a million deaths annually worldwide. Antibiotic resistance is conferred by either antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) which can be acquired by horizontal gene transfer between bacterial cells or by mutations in pre-existing DNA. 18. Development of Fluorescent Nucleobase Analogues - Intrinsically labelled nucleic acids for molecular binding investigations
Abstract : This thesis focuses on the design, synthesis and utilization of fluorescent nucleobase analogues (FBAs). FBAs are an important class of compounds, used in the research of nucleic acids. The class of canonical FBAs, i.e. READ MORE

19. Blood Culture Negative Endocarditis
Abstract : The lethal disease infective endocarditis (IE) is caused by microorganisms that attack heart valves. Early diagnosis and identification of the causative agents are important for the choice of treatment. Optimal treatment may be difficult to achieve if blood culture negative endocarditis (CNE) is present. READ MORE

20. Accuracy of mRNA Translation in Bacterial Protein Synthesis
Abstract : Reading of messenger RNA (mRNA) by aminoacyl-tRNAs (aa-tRNAs) on the ribosomes in the bacterial cell occurs with high accuracy. It follows from the physical chemistry of enzymatic reactions that there must be a trade-off between rate and accuracy of initial tRNA selection in protein synthesis: when the current accuracy, the A-value, approaches its maximal possible value, the d-value, the kinetic efficiency of the reaction approaches zero.
