  1. 6. Serum Amyloid A Protein (SAA) in Healthy and Infected Individuals

    Author : Anders Lannergård; Göran Friman; Anders Larsson; Uwe Ewald; Jonas Hedlund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Communicable diseases; acute phase proteins; adult; Administration Oral; aminoglycosides; amyloidosis; antibiotics; bacterial infections; body temperature; C-reactive protein; cefuroxime; cystitis; cytokines; elderly; infant; interleukin-6; newborn; pyelonephritis; serum amyloid A protein; virus diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar;

    Abstract : Serum amyloid A protein (SAA) is an acute phase protein that has recently gained increasing interest as a potential marker for disease and treatment monitoring. We investigated SAA and CRP levels in (a) patients with various common infectious diseases (n=98), (b) patients with pyelonephritis (n=37) versus patients with cystitis (n=32), (c) healthy individuals of varying ages (n=231), (d) very immature newborn infants with or without nosocomial infections (NIs) (n=72) and (e) patients with bacterial infections treated with cefuroxime (n=81). 2. 7. Pharmacometric Models for Antibacterial Agents to Improve Dosing Strategies

    Author : Elisabet I Nielsen; Lena E Friberg; Otto Cars; Mats O Karlsson; Marie Sandström; Alan Forrest; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pharmacometrics; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; modeling; NONMEM; antibiotics; in vitro; time-kill curve; PK PD indices; gentamicin; aminoglycosides; newborn infants; premature infants; cystatin C; Biopharmacy; Biofarmaci; Pharmacokinetics and Drug Therapy; Farmakokinetik och läkemedelsterapi;

    Abstract : Antibiotics are among the most commonly prescribed drugs. Although the majority of these drugs were developed several decades ago, optimal dosage (dose, dosing interval and treatment duration) have still not been well defined. READ MORE

  3. 8. Antibiotic Resistance and the Cellular Currency S-adenosyl-methionine : Modification of aminoglycosides and nucleic acids

    Author : Sandesh Kanchugal P; Maria Selmer; Ditlev Brodersen; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Antibiotic resistance; streptomycin; spectinomycin; X-ray crystallography; methyltransferase; Biology with specialization in Structural Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot strukturbiologi;

    Abstract : Streptomycin and spectinomycin are antibiotics that bind to ribosomes and inhibit protein synthesis. Common resistance mechanisms involve enzymatic modification of the two drugs by aminoglycoside nucleotidyltransferases (ANTs). The first part of this thesis covers the structural mechanism of two ANT enzymes. READ MORE

  4. 9. Modulating Organ Dysfunction in Experimental Septic Shock : Effects of Aminoglycosides, Antiendotoxin Measures and Endotoxin Tolerance

    Author : Markus Castegren; Jan Sjölin; Claes Frostell; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Lipopolysaccharide; animal model; pig; tobramycin; endotoxin elimination; immunoparalysis; secondary sepsis; Infectious diseases; Infektionssjukdomar; Infektionssjukdomar; Infectious Diseases;

    Abstract : Sepsis is a common diagnose in the intensive care population, burdened with a high mortality. The systemic inflammatory reaction underlying the development of septic organ dysfunction can be modeled using Gram-negative bacterial lipopolysaccharide, endotoxin. READ MORE

  5. 10. On the development of low level resistance in gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria after antibiotic exposure

    Author : Gunilla Rådberg; Signe Ringertz; Östergötlands Läns Landsting; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : Resistance has been found to develop and spread via several mechanisms against virtually all clinically available antimicrobial agents. Increasing use of antibiotics has been shown to correlate to increasing incidence of bacterial resistance. READ MORE
