  1. 1. Monitoring of Cellular Dynamics with Focus on Electrochemical Detection Techniques

    Author : Arto Heiskanen; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Microfluidic system; Microchip; PC12; Saccharomyces cerevisiae; Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy; Cell adhesion; Amperometry; Exocytosis; Redox environment; Cell-based assay;

    Abstract : This thesis presents work in two main areas of focus, the development of electroanalytical techniques to monitor the dynamics of cellular processes as well as design and fabrication of microelectrode chips for electrochemical detection as well as a prototype microfluidic system to be used for cell analysis and culturing. The electrochemically monitored cellular parameters were the cellular redox environment (CRE), cell adhesion and exocytosis. READ MORE

  2. 2. Lipid Vesicle Fusion: Investigation, Generation and Manipulation of Cell-Membrane Mimics

    Author : Lisa Simonsson; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; diffusion; spreading lipid bilayers; cell mimic; micromanipulation; lipid bilayer; microfluidics; site-specificity; DNA; membrane-receptor interactions; total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy; model system; self-assembly; TIRF microscopy; FRET; exocytosis; vesicles; fluorescence resonance energy transfer; biomembranes; amperometry; membrane fusion;

    Abstract : Membrane fusion is essential for nerve-cell communication, for protein transport between cell organelles and the cell-membrane and for enabling the merger between virus and host membranes during virus infection. In this work, cell-membrane mimics were constructed and evaluated as models for studies of the membrane-fusion process. READ MORE

    Abstract : The Basal Ganglia consist of a number of different nuclei that form a diverse circuitry of GABAergic, dopaminergic and glutamatergic neurons. This complex network is further organized in subcircuits that govern limbic and motor functions in humans and other vertebrates. READ MORE

  4. 4. Development of Ultra-fast Biosensors for Detection of Non-electroactive Neurotransmitters

    Author : Yuanmo Wang; Chalmers University of Technology; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; artificial cell; quantification; stability; deformation; dynamic light scattering; adsorption; amperometry; nanoparticle tracking analysis; enzyme monolayer; glucose oxidase; exocytosis; choline oxidase; acetylcholine; enzymatic activity; acetylcholine esterase; gold nanoparticles; Biosensor;

    Abstract : During neuronal communication neurotransmitters are released through the process exocytosis that occurs on the time scale of sub-milliseconds to milliseconds. Neuronal activity by neurotransmitters that are non-electroactive cannot easily be monitored due to limitations in the temporal resolutions of the sensor probes for these analytes. READ MORE

  5. 5. Selenium Compounds and Antioxidant Capacity in Bovine Milk. Studies on Glutathione Peroxidase, Bioavailability and Electrochemical Techniques

    Author : Jun Chen; Kemiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; General biomedical sciences; Biomedicinska vetenskaper allmänt ; Kemiteknik och kemisk teknologi; Chemical technology and engineering; Livsmedelsteknik; Food and drink technology; amperometry; voltammetry; antioxidant capacity; ileostomy; bioavailability; glutathione peroxidase; bovine milk; selenium;

    Abstract : The efficacy and function of antioxidants have been intensively studied in foods and other biological systems in recent decades. This thesis concerns different aspects of the antioxidant properties of bovine milk, with emphasis on measurement of the total antioxidant capacity (TAC), the activity of the selenium-containing glutathione peroxidase (GSHPx), and the bioavailability of selenium from bovine milk in humans.
