11. Neuromusculoskeletal interfacing of lower limb prostheses
Abstract : The method of bone-anchored attachment of limb prostheses via a percutaneous skeletal extension was developed to circumvent commonly reported problems associated with the conventional method of socket attachment. In addition to the direct structural connection, the percutaneous implant may serve as a conduit for bidirectional communication between muscles and nerves within the residual limb and the prosthesis. Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to gain a deeper understanding of the factors contributing to the fixation of bone-anchored implants, especially with regard to surface chemistry, surface topography and implant loading. The methodology used in the thesis ranges from systematic bench studies, computer simulations, experimental in vivo studies, to load cell measurements on patients treated with bone-anchored amputation prostheses. Abstract : The Swedish Knee Arthroplasty Register (SKAR) was used to identify 478 cases that underwent a first-time revision with exchange or removal of the prosthesis due to infection during the years 1986–2000. 30% of the infections were diagnosed within 3 months from primary operation and two-thirds were diagnosed within 2 years.
