  1. 1. Modeling Amyloid-β Pathology in Alzheimer’s Disease Using the Arctic Mutation

    Author : Ola Philipson; Lars Nilsson; Lars Lannfelt; Fred van Leuven; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Alzheimer’s disease; Amyloid; Amyloid-β; intraneuronal; transgenic mice; immunohistochemistry; ELISA; Public health medicine research areas; Folkhälsomedicinska forskningsområden; Geriatrics; Geriatrik;

    Abstract : The Arctic mutation in the Amyloid-β (Aβ) domain of the Amyloid-β precursor protein (APP) causes Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and confers unique biochemical characteristics to Aβ peptides. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate a transgenic model with the Arctic mutation, and to use it to gain new insights into the mechanisms of early (pre-plaque) and late-stage Aβ pathogenesis in AD. 2. 2. Synthesis of Ring-fused Peptidomimetics : Interacting with Amyloid Fibrils

    Author : Dan E. Adolfsson; Fredrik Almqvist; Anna Linusson; Morten Grötli; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; organic chemistry; synthesis; peptidomimetics; thiazoline fused 2-pyridones; Alzheimer s disease; Parkinson s disease; Amyloid; Amyloid-beta; alfa-Synuclein; method development; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease are the two most common neurological disorders in humans. Both conditions involve progressive death of neurons in the central nervous system, decline in bodily functions and eventually (and invariably), death. So far, no cure exists and the available treatments can only ease symptoms. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterization of [18F]flutemetamol binding properties : A β-amyloid PET imaging ligand

    Author : Kerstin Heurling; Mark Lubberink; Jens Sörensen; Julie Price; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Positron emission tomography PET ; molecular imaging; amyloid; tracer validation; Radiology; Radiologi;

    Abstract : The criteria for diagnosing Alzheimer’s disease (AD) have recently been revised to include the use of biomarkers for the in vivo presence of β-amyloid, one of the neuropathological hallmarks of AD. Examples of such biomarkers are positron emission tomography (PET) β-amyloid specific ligands, including [18F]flutemetamol. READ MORE

  4. 4. Amyloid-β Protofibril Formation and Neurotoxicity : Implications for Alzheimer’s Disease

    Author : Ann-Sofi Johansson; Lars Lannfelt; Frida Ekholm Pettersson; Pär Gellerfors; Tobias Hartmann; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Neurosciences; Amyloid-β; Neurotoxicity; Aggregation; Protofibrils; Alzheimer s disease; Neurovetenskap;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common cause of dementia. A characteristic feature of AD is the presence of amyloid plaques in the cortex and hippocampus of the brain. The principal component of these plaques is the amyloid-β (Aβ) peptide, a cleavage product from proteolytic processing of amyloid precursor protein (APP). READ MORE

  5. 5. NMR studies on interactions between the amyloid β peptide and selected molecules

    Author : Anna Wahlström; Astrid Gräslund; Göran Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder linked to the amyloid β (Aβ) peptide, a 38-43 residue peptide. The detailed molecular disease mechanism(s) is (are) unknown, but oligomeric Aβ structures are proposed to be involved. READ MORE
