  1. 16. Islet amyloid polypeptide : Perspectives on the storage and plasma concentration of islet amyloid polypeptide (IAPP) in rodent models of obesity and non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and aspects of amyloidogenesis andelimination of IAPP

    Author : Arnold Leckström; Sture Falkmer; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The present study was aimed to investigate plasma concentrations and pancreatic storage of IAPP in relation to that of insulin in four different animal models with hyperglycemia, hyperinsulinemia, obesity and/or NIDDM. The NMRI mice fed a high-fat diet for six months, the Psammomys on high-energy (HE) diet and the genetically obese (ob/ob) mice studied for one year all revealed significantly elevated plasma IAPP concentrations, while the IAPP levels were unchanged in the spontaneously diabetic GK rats during a glucose tolerance test. 2. 17. NMR studies on interactions between the amyloid β peptide and selected molecules

    Author : Anna Wahlström; Astrid Gräslund; Göran Karlsson; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Amyloid β peptide; Alzheimer s disease; Aggregation; Oligomer; Amyloid; Interaction; Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy; Circular Dichroism Spectroscopy; Thioflavin T; Detergent; Congo red; Affibody; Cyclodextrin dimer; Metal ion; Chemistry; Kemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biophysics; biofysik;

    Abstract : Alzheimer’s disease is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder linked to the amyloid β (Aβ) peptide, a 38-43 residue peptide. The detailed molecular disease mechanism(s) is (are) unknown, but oligomeric Aβ structures are proposed to be involved. READ MORE

  3. 18. Molecular Mechanisms in Amyloid Disorders. Novel Treatment Options in Hereditary Cystatin C Amyloid Angiopathy

    Author : Gustav Östner; Avdelningen för klinisk kemi och farmakologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cystatin C; amyloid; amyloidosis; oligomers; domain swapping;

    Abstract : The pathophysiological process in Alzheimer’s disease and other amyloid disorders usually involves the transformation of a soluble monomeric protein via potentially toxic oligomers into amyloid fibrils. The structure and properties of the intermediary oligomers have been difficult to study due to their instability and dynamic equilibrium with smaller and larger species. READ MORE

  4. 19. A Drosophila Disease-Model for Transthyretin-associated Amyloidosis

    Author : Malgorzata Pokrzywa; Erik Lundgren; Damian Crowther; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; transthyretin; amyloid; amyloidosis; Drosophila; transthyretin-associated amyloidosis; Familial amyloid polyneuropathy; neurodegeneration; serum amyloid P component; Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs; drug screens; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Amyloidoses comprise a group of gain-of-toxic function protein misfolding diseases, in which normally soluble proteins in their functional state undergo conformational changes into highly organized and generally intractable thread-like aggregates, termed amyloid fibrils. These structures accumulate predominantly in the extracellular space but growing evidence suggests that amyloids may start to form intracellularly. READ MORE

  5. 20. Conjugated Polymers, Amyloid Detection and Assembly of Biomolecular Nanowires

    Author : Anna Herland; Olle Inganäs; Samuel I. Stupp; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Conjugated Polymers; Amyloid Fibrils; Nanowires; Self-Assembly; Sensor; Amyloid Detection; Physics; Fysik;

    Abstract : The research field of conjugated polymers has grown due to the optical and electronic properties of the material, useful in applications such as solar cells and printed electronics, but also in biosensors and for interactions with biomolecules. In this thesis conjugated polymers have been used in two related topics; to detect conformational changes in proteins and to assemble the polymers with biomolecules into nanowires. READ MORE
