  1. 21. Sludge from pulp and paper mills for biogas production : Strategies to improve energy performance in wastewater treatment and sludge management

    Author : Alina Hagelqvist; Thomas Nilsson; Karin M. Granström; Bengt Månsson; Bo Mattiasson; Thomas Welander; Karlstads universitet; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; anaerobic digestion; pulp and paper mill sludge; methane production; energy efficient sludge management; Miljö- och energisystem; Environmental and Energy Systems;

    Abstract : The production of pulp and paper is associated with the generation of large quantities of wastewater that has to be purified to avoid severe pollution of the environment. Wastewater purification in pulp and paper mills combines sedimentation, biological treatment, chemical precipitation, flotation and anaerobic treatment, and the specific combination of techniques is determined by the local conditions. 2. 22. Application of ozone in wastewater treatment : Oxidation of pharmaceuticals and filamentous bulking sludge

    Author : Filip Nilsson; Avdelningen för kemiteknik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Ozone; Filamentous Sludge; Pharmaceuticals; Wastewater Treatment; Ozone; Filamentous bulking sludge; Pharmaceutical reduction;

    Abstract : As pharmaceutical removal was not part of the of the modern wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) design, it is not surprising that WWTPs have been identified as major point sources of pharmaceuticals entering the environment. The oxidation of pharmaceuticals in the WWTP effluent is one of the-end-of-pipe solutions that are considered most ready for full-scale use. READ MORE

  3. 23. Biofilms in Nitrogen Removal - Bacterial Population Dynamics and Spatial Distribution

    Author : Robert Almstrand; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; AOB; NOB; biofilms; image analysis; FISH; Nitrosomonas; population dynamics; spatial distribution;

    Abstract : Efficient nitrogen removal at wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is necessary to avoid eutrophication of recipient waters. The most commonly used approach consists of aerobic nitrification and subsequent anaerobic denitrification resulting in the release of dinitrogen gas into the atmosphere. READ MORE

  4. 24. Structure and function of microbial communities in acid sulfate soil and the terrestrial deep biosphere

    Author : Xiaofen Wu; Mark Dopson; Ricardo Amils; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molecular phylogeny; acid sulfate soils; metal; acidophiles; deep biosphere; oligotrophy; biofilm formation; metagenome; binning; metabolism; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the use of different DNA sequencing technologies to investigate the structure and function of microbial communities in two extreme environments, boreal acid sulfate soil and the terrestrial deep biosphere.The first of the two investigated environments was soils containing un-oxidized metal sulfides that are termed ‘potential acid sulfate soil’ (PASS) materials. 5. 25. High Cell Density Strategies and Adaptive Evolution for Microbial Propionic Acid Production

    Author : Victor Hugo Cavero Olguin; Bioteknik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Propionic acid (PA) is a naturally occurring short chain fatty acid produced by microbial fermentation of the indigestible foods in the intestine, having a positive effect on the gastrointestinal health. PA inhibits the growth of pathogenic bacteria and molds; hence it is widely used as preservative for food, feed and grains. READ MORE
