  1. 1. Anaerobic degradation of phenol and related aromatics

    Author : Anna Karlsson; James M. Tiedje; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; Aromatic compunds; anaerobic degradation; Fysik; Kemi; INTERDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH AREAS; TVÄRVETENSKAPLIGA FORSKNINGSOMRÅDEN;

    Abstract : Phenol and other simple aromatic compounds have been found in water leached from landfills, showing that these types of compounds could be either present in disposed waste, or released from it via transformation and degradation processes. Hence, the fate anddegradation potential of such compounds under landfilling conditions is of great concern. READ MORE

  2. 2. Upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor : modelling

    Author : Raul Rodriguez; Luis Moreno; Olle Wahlberg; Gunno Renman; KTH; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; wastewater; anaerobic treatment; modelling; UASB reactor.; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Abstract : Anaerobic treatment is widely used around the world as a biological stage in both domestic and industrial wastewater-treatment plants. The two principal advantages of anaerobic over aerobic treatment are the production of biogas, which can be used as fuel, and the lower rate of biomass production, which results in lower maintenance costs for the plant. 3. 3. Microbial Degradation of Toxaphene

    Author : Martha Lacayo; Avdelningen för arbets- och miljömedicin; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; kontroll av utsläpp; Miljöteknik; pollution control; Enterobacter; Environmental technology; Bjerkandera; Toxaphene; Biodegradation; Biotechnology; Bioteknik;

    Abstract : This works deals with the degradation of a group of recalcitrant compounds known as toxaphene. Toxaphene is a complex mixture of chlorinated compounds including hexa- and octachlorocamphenes, hepta-, nona- and decachlorobornanes. Some components of toxaphene are very persistent while others are degraded rapidly by both abiotic and biotic processes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Microbial life deep underground : From anaerobic cultures to reconstructed genomes

    Author : George Westmeijer; Mark Dopson; Hans Røy; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Continental deep biosphere; microbial ecology; anaerobic enrichment cultures; Candidatus Desulforudis audaxviator; Thiobacillus denitrificans; flow-cells; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Abstract : The deep biosphere refers to the vast ecosystem of life beneath the Earth’s surface, residing in the fractured bedrock and pores of rocks, largely isolated from solar energy. These fractures enclose an important reservoir of groundwater that contains microorganisms active in processes such as the uptake of inorganic carbon, sulfur cycling, or the degradation of organic matter. 5. 5. Anaerobic treatment of wastewater in a UASB reactor

    Author : Larisa Korsak; Luis Moreno; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Anaerobic treatment; UASB; granular biomass; methanogenic activity; modelling; axial dispersion; Chemical engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Abstract : The anaerobic treatment of waste water has been studied with an emphasis on the Up- flow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) reactor. A model to describe the processes occurring in a UASB reactor was developed and an experimental study of the anaerobic wastewater treatment systems in Nicaragua was also performed. READ MORE
