22. Public Access to Surgical Care. Studies on Timeliness, Capacity, Safety and Affordability
Abstract : Background. A once commonly held belief was that surgery is too complicated, too expensive, and too ineffectively addressing a too minor proportion of the burden of disease to deserve priority in a setting of scarce healthcare resources in low- and middle-income countries. READ MORE

23. Anaesthetics and the blood vessel wall. Actions of propofol and sevoflurane on sympathetic and endothelial control of smooth muscle function
Abstract : The anaesthetics we use today dose-dependently decrease the mean arterial pressure partly due to direct or indirect effects on the blood vessels. In the present thesis human omental arteries and veins and rat femoral arteries were investigated in vitro concerning the effects of the intravenous anaesthetic propofol and the volatile anaesthetic sevoflurane on the function of the perivascular sympathetic nerves and the endothelial cells. 24. Modern inhalation agents and effects of anaesthesia equipment during low-flow anaesthesia
Abstract : Volatile agents are economically and ecologically acceptable only when administered via low-flow systems. However, sevoflurane degrades during low-flow anaesthesia to compound A, and a high carbon dioxide absorber temperature increases this degradation. READ MORE

25. Amino acid-induced thermogenesis during anaesthesia
Abstract : General anaesthesia causes hypothermia due to decreased metabolic rate and impaired thermoregulation. Adverse effects of hypothermia are coagulation disorders, wound infection, ischemic cardiac events and postoperative shivering. READ MORE
