  1. 11. Autolytinae: molecules, morphology, and reproduction

    Author : Arne Nygren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phylogeny; systematics; revision; new taxa; PhyloCode; reconstruction of ancestral states.;

    Abstract : Autolytines constitute a well delineated group of syllid polychaetes, separated from other syllids by the presence of a sinuous pharynx, lack of ventral cirri and reproduction with dimorphic sexes. The group comprises c. 170 nominal species distributed worldwide, mostly inhabiting hard substrates restricted to the continental shelf. READ MORE

  2. 12. Molecular characterization and evolution of alpha-actinin : from protozoa to vertebrates

    Author : Ana Virel; Lars Backman; Kristina Djinovic-Carugo; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; alpha-actinin; evolution; spectrin repeat; intragene duplication; phylogenetic tree; spectrin superfamily; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : alpha-actinin is a ubiquitous protein found in most eukaryotic organisms. The ability to form dimers allows alpha-actinin to cross-link actin in different structures. In muscle cells alpha-actinin is found at the Z-disk of sarcomeres. READ MORE

  3. 13. Pollination in Ephedra (Gnetales)

    Author : Kristina Bolinder; Catarina Rydin; Jürg Schönenberger; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; växtsystematik; Plant Systematics;

    Abstract : Pollination, i.e., the transport of male gametophytes to female gametophytes, can occur with biotic or abiotic vectors and is necessary for fertilization and completion of the lifecycle in all seed plants. READ MORE

  4. 14. The Burden of Responsibility : Predicaments of Environmental Life in the Caraballo Mountains, Northern Philippines

    Author : Macario Lacbawan; Don Kulick; Claudia Merli; Deborah Gewertz; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Indigeneity; Indigenous People; Environment; Conservation; Legal Recognition; Swidden Agriculture; Ikalahan People; Philippines; Kulturantropologi; Cultural Anthropology;

    Abstract : Indigenous people are not obviously, or naturally, stewards of the environment. But when the idea that they are such custodians gains legal traction, and when indigenous land-use practices are codified to reflect environmental principles, they become a burden of responsibility that has significant consequences for the lives and the livelihoods of indigenous communities. 5. 15. The evolution of ribonucleotide reductases

    Author : Daniel Lundin; Anthony Poole; Britt-Marie Sjöberg; Christos Ouzounis; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Evolution; ribonucleotide reductase; horizontal gene transfer; phylogeny; protein classification; Molecular biology; Molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) catalyses the transformation of RNA building blocks, ribonucleotides, to DNA building blocks, deoxyribonucleotides. This is the only extant reaction pathway for de novo synthesis of DNA building blocks and the enzyme is thus necessary for life. RNR is found in all but a few organisms. READ MORE
