  1. 1. Glutamate and GABA signalling components in the human brain and in immune cells

    Author : Amol K. Bhandage; Bryndis Birnir; Gerard P. Ahern; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Neuroscience; Neurovetenskap; Immunologi; Immunology;

    Abstract : Glutamate and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) are the principal excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in the central nervous system (CNS). They both can activate their ionotropic and metabotropic receptors. READ MORE

  2. 2. Development of in vitro and ex vivo positron-emitting tracer techniques and their application to neurotrauma

    Author : Sven Sihver; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Neurosciences; Short-lived radionuclides; in vitro receptor binding; in vitro and ex vivo autoradiography; positron emission tomography; benzodiazepine; muscarinic acetylcholine; and NMDA receptors in CNS; experimental neurotrauma; Neurovetenskap; Neurology; Neurologi; medicinsk farmakologi; Medical Pharmacology;

    Abstract : The use of positron-emitting tracers has been extended beyond tomographic facilities in the last few years, giving rise to a general positron-emitting tracing technique. The methodological part of the present thesis involved the evaluation of the performance of storage phosphor (SP) plates, with tracers labeled with high-energy, short-lived, positron-emitting radionuclides, using homogenized tissue specimens and autoradiography with frozen brain sections. 3. 3. Ischemic Cell Death in the CNS - applications of a new in vitro model

    Author : Tobias Cronberg; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; neuropsykologi; Neurologi; Neurology; astrocyte; stroke; adenosine; hyperglycaemia; glucose; free radicals; calcium; in vitro; brain ischemia; slice; neuropsychology; neurofysiologi; neurophysiology;

    Abstract : Ischemic brain damage is a common cause of death and disability. A global ischemic insult is usually the result of a transient cardiac arrest while occlusion of cerebral blood vessels leads to focal ischemic lesions, commonly termed stroke. READ MORE

  4. 4. Physiopathological aspects of NMDA transmission in the basal ganglia : in vitro and in vivo release studies

    Author : Michele Morari; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : basal ganglia; NMDA; dizocilpine; microdialysis; slices; synaptosomes; dopamine; acetylcholine; glutamate; GABA; 6OH-dopamine;

    Abstract : N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) is an excitatory amino acid selectively acting on a subclass of glutamate receptors (the NMDA ionotropic receptor) which has been involved in many of the physiological and pathological effects of glutamate in the CNS. The basal ganglia are particularly enriched in NMDA receptors and NMDA receptor activation in the basal ganglia has been involved in the expression of motor behaviour. READ MORE

  5. 5. Experimental spinal cord injuries : a histopathological, neurological, and pharmacological study in the rat

    Author : Mia von Euler; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; Sweden STockholm Karolinska Institutet Institutionen för klinisk neurovetenskap; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Photochemically-induced ischemic lesions and compression-induced traumatic injuries in the mid-thoracic spinal cord were studied in female rats. The histopathological development of the injuries was found to be similar to that described in other experimental spinal cord injury models and in human post-mortem material. READ MORE
