  1. 1. Immunological, vascular and metabolic actions of androgens

    Author : Marta Lantero Rodriguez; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : androgens; androgen receptor; immune system; atherosclerosis; abdominal aortic aneurysm; brown fat; mice;

    Abstract : Men have higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but lower risk of autoimmune disorders than women. The actions of sex steroids may be involved in the sexual dimorphism of these diseases. Although testosterone, the main androgen, seems to protect against autoimmunity, its role in CVD is contradictory and disease-dependent. READ MORE

  2. 2. Actions of androgens and estrogens in experimental models of cardiovascular disease

    Author : Johan Bourghardt Fagman; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : AR; atherosclerosis; AAA; androgens; testosterone; 2-methoxyestradiol;

    Abstract : Men are at higher risk of developing both atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Actions of sex steroids are hypothesized to underlie these gender differences. Testosterone, the major androgen, reduces atherosclerosis in male animal models but is suggested to promote AAA formation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Sex steroid metabolism and body composition

    Author : Charlotte Swanson; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : UDP glucuronosyltranferases; polymorphisms; androgens; glucuronidated androgen metabolites; fat mass; bone; metabolic risk factors; population study;

    Abstract : Background: The bioactive androgens testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) regulate bone and fat mass in men. The effects of androgens are largely determined by the rate of their synthesis and inactivation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Sex steroid secretion during childhood in males - with focus on prematurity, birth size, and growth patterns

    Author : Kjersti Kvernebo-Sunnergren; Göteborgs universitet; Göteborgs universitet; Gothenburg University; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; androgens; birth weight; body height; body weight; child; estrogens; male; mass spectrometry; premature birth; Silver-Russell syndrome;

    Abstract : Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to evaluate sex steroid secretion patterns during childhood in boys and to study how sex steroid concentrations relate to gestational age, birth weight, growth patterns, and adult height outcome. Patients and Methods: In paper I, 11 growth hormone-treated boys with Silver–Russell syndrome (SRS) who had reached adult height were included. READ MORE

  5. 5. Prospective studies of hormonal and life-style related factors and risk of cancer

    Author : Sara Wirén; Pär Stattin; Håkan Jonsson; Tanja Stocks; Alicja Wolk; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; prostate cancer; epidemiology; androgens; risk factors; fatherhood status; dizygotic twins; height; cohort; case-control; prospective; Cancer Epidemiology; cancerepidemiologi;

    Abstract : Background: Androgens are important in prostate cancer development but how circulating levels of androgens affect risk of prostate cancer of different aggressiveness is not clear. Being childless has been associated with a lower risk of prostate cancer, but it is not clear if this association is causal or a result of residual confounding. READ MORE
