  1. 1. Immunological, vascular and metabolic actions of androgens

    Author : Marta Lantero Rodriguez; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; androgens; androgen receptor; immune system; atherosclerosis; abdominal aortic aneurysm; brown fat; mice;

    Abstract : Men have higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) but lower risk of autoimmune disorders than women. The actions of sex steroids may be involved in the sexual dimorphism of these diseases. Although testosterone, the main androgen, seems to protect against autoimmunity, its role in CVD is contradictory and disease-dependent. READ MORE

  2. 2. Roles of Androgens in Cardiovascular Physiology and Pathophysiology

    Author : Elin Svedlund Eriksson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; androgens; androgen receptor; atherosclerosis; myocardial infarction; immune system; SARMs; male mice;

    Abstract : ABSTRACT Atherosclerosis is the major underlying cause of cardiovascular disease, such as myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke, and these conditions are the leading causes of death both in Sweden and globally. The immune system is involved in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis as well as post-MI cardiac injury. READ MORE

  3. 3. Actions of androgens and estrogens in experimental models of cardiovascular disease

    Author : Johan Bourghardt Fagman; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; AR; atherosclerosis; AAA; androgens; testosterone; 2-methoxyestradiol;

    Abstract : Men are at higher risk of developing both atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). Actions of sex steroids are hypothesized to underlie these gender differences. Testosterone, the major androgen, reduces atherosclerosis in male animal models but is suggested to promote AAA formation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Androgens and progesterone in tissues and the gastrointestinal tract - Mapping of tissue-specific sex steroid levels in mice

    Author : Hannah Colldén; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; androgens; progesterone; intracrinology; gastrointestinal tract; gut microbiota;

    Abstract : Sex steroids such as androgens can exert both positive and negative effects in tissues and are important in physiology and pathophysiological states of men and women. Androgens originate mainly from the gonads. READ MORE

  5. 5. Sex steroid metabolism and body composition

    Author : Charlotte Swanson; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : UDP glucuronosyltranferases; polymorphisms; androgens; glucuronidated androgen metabolites; fat mass; bone; metabolic risk factors; population study;

    Abstract : Background: The bioactive androgens testosterone (T) and dihydrotestosterone (DHT) regulate bone and fat mass in men. The effects of androgens are largely determined by the rate of their synthesis and inactivation. READ MORE
