  1. 1. Nutrient utilisation in growing Cambodian cattle : effect of different feed sources and feed conservation techniques

    Author : Keo Sath; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Natural forages are an important part of the diet of cattle in Cambodia, but their nutrient value, particularly in terms of macro-minerals, may be inadequate, leading to potential mineral deficiencies in grazing cattle. This thesis compared the nutrient composition of six forage types (rice bran, rice straw, para grass, cassava foliage, leucaena leaves, water hyacinth leaves) from two regions in Cambodia against faecal and urinary excretion of macro minerals by cattle. 2. 2. Detection and Characterisation of Salmonella in Animal Feed Samples by PCR-Based Methods

    Author : Charlotta Löfström; Teknisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Food and drink technology; Livsmedelsteknik; Biotechnology; Bioteknik; Biokemisk teknik; Biochemical technology; Analytisk kemi; Analytical chemistry; mykologi; virologi; bakteriologi; Mikrobiologi; validation; Microbiology; bacteriology; virology; mycology; Salmonella; ribotyping; detection; animal feed; randomly amplified polymorphic DNA; pulsed-field gel electrophorsis; pre-PCR processing; PCR; polymerase chain reaction; genotyping;

    Abstract : Animal feed is a recognised source of Salmonella enterica for farm livestock and may also indirectly cause infection in people consuming foods of animal origin. It is therefore important to have rapid, reproducible and specific methods for the detection of Salmonella in feed, and for the characterisation of strains for further epidemiological investigations or to trace the source of contamination in a production facility. 3. 3. Hempseed cake as a protein feed for ruminants

    Author : Linda Karlsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Increasing the use of locally produced protein feeds in ruminant production systems in northern Europe would be a valuable development. Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) can be cultivated at high latitudes and cold-pressing the seeds to extract the oil produces a residue, hempseed cake (HC), with a high protein content. READ MORE

  4. 4. Methane production in dairy cows : impact of feed and rumen microbiota

    Author : Rebecca Danielsson; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Greenhouse gas emissions from the agricultural sector represent about 14.5% of total emissions related to human activity. Approximately 40% of agricultural sector emissions derive from enteric methane (CH₄) production by ruminants, due to their microbial digestion of feed. READ MORE

  5. 5. Feed efficiency in dairy cows: individual cow variability in component traits

    Author : Abdulai Guinguina; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY;

    Abstract : Feed efficiency (FE) varies between cows, and this variation is linked to the variation in energy metabolism variables. Respiration chambers are needed for measuring energy metabolism variables while individual cow dry matter intake (DMI) records are necessary for measuring FE, but these are difficult to obtain due to cost and logistic constraints.
