1. Early arterial disease of the lower extremities in diabetes : diagnostic evaluation and risk markers
Abstract : The aim of the present thesis was to assess the occurrence of early lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) in patients with diabetes and to assess novel potential risk markers for development or worsening of LEAD in the same patients. In parallel different measures of impaired peripheral circulation were evaluated. READ MORE

2. Hypertension, atherosclerosis and fracture risk - observational investigations with focus on antihypertensive therapy
Abstract : Aim: To investigate associations between hypertension, arteriosclerotic disease, and fracture risk in adults and the elderly, with a certain focus on how specific antihypertensive drug treatments in patients with high blood pressure might affect the risk for fractures. Methods and results: In Study I and II, the associations between different antihypertensive treatments and fracture risk were investigated in a cohort of about 60. READ MORE

3. Early life influences on adult organ function, health and disease, including data from Swedish population-based cohorts
Abstract : Prenatal insults or adverse events during the in-utero period may lead to suboptimal function of adult organs because of the impairment of critical organ development and growth, as linked to lower birth weight. This may ultimately predispose the individual to the later onset of some diseases in adulthood, a process known as Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD). READ MORE

4. On leg ischaemia : aspects of epidemiology and diagnostics
Abstract : The first part of this thesis consists of a population-based epidemiological study on symptomatic leg arterial disease in a Swedish community, based on a postal questionnaire and systolic ankle pressure measurements, with calculation of the ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI; usually ≥ 1.0 in healthy subjects). 5. Epidemiological aspects of peripheral arterial disease
Abstract : Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is defined as atherosclerosis in the arteries distal to the aortic bifurcation, with or without symptoms in the legs. It is diagnosed by ankle brachial pressure index (ABI) measurements and symptoms, and a confirmed diagnosis is associated with an increased cardiovascular (CV) mortality reaching the same levels as in patients with symptomatic coronary disease.
