21. The endothelin system and cardiopulmonary dysfunction in porcine endotoxin shock
Abstract : The endothelium-derived peptide endothelin-1, acting via the endothelinA and endothelinB receptors, possesses strong vasoconstrictive properties shown to affect pulmonary and systemic circulation as well as cardiac function. During septic and endotoxin shock a marked increase in circulating plasma endothelin-1 levels is observed which is associated with morbidity, cardiac dysfunction and lung injury. READ MORE

22. Type-specific human papillomavirus antibodies : detection, characterization and application in seroepidemiology
Abstract : Background: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted DNA virus that causes several human cancers, notably cervical and other anogenital cancers. The antibody response to this virus is of interest both because knowledge of the antigenic structures that induce protective immunity forms the basis for prophylactic vaccine development and because it forms the basis of seroepidemiology, the method of choice for studies of HPV infectivity, of HPV spread in populations and of cancer risks following HPV exposure. 23. Liver tumour promoting effects by polychlorinated biphenyls
Abstract : PCBs cause a number of toxic effects and are present in a variety of biological samples including fish, meat and diary products. Cancer is a serious toxic effect by PCBs that has been observed in animal experiments but the knowledge about PCB induced carcinogenicity is still scarce. READ MORE

24. Endothelin in the pulmonary circulation with special reference to hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction
Abstract : A number of substances originating from the pulmonary endothelium have recently been found to be involved in the regulation of pulmonary vascular tone. Accumulating evidence suggests that endothelial dysfunction contributes to pulmonary hypertension, an important clinical problem often associated with hypoxemia. READ MORE

25. Genomics and transcriptomics of plant beneficial Serratia spp
Abstract : Plant growth stimulation and antagonism against phytopathogens by rhizobacteria are widely recognised phenomena, but the variation in the underlying causal mechanisms between and within different bacterial taxa is still poorly understood. Some bacteria of the genus Serratia are known to be associated with plant roots, and have potential as possible biocontrol agents in agriculture. READ MORE
