1. Human iris characteristics as biomarkers for personality
Abstract : This dissertation explains why behavioral genetic research can be better informed by using characteristics in the human iris as biomarkers for personality, and is divided into five parts. Part I gives an introduction to the classical twin method and an overview of the findings that have led most developmental researchers to recognize that the normal variation of personality depends on a complex interplay between genetic and environmental factors. 2. Molecular Adaptations in the Endogenous Opioid System in Human and Rodent Brain
Abstract : The aims of the thesis were to examine i) whether the endogenous opioid system (EOS) is lateralized in human brain areas involved in processing of emotions and pain; ii) whether EOS responses to unilateral brain injury depend on side of lesion, and iii) whether in human alcoholics, this system is involved in molecular adaptations in brain areas relevant for cognitive control of addictive behavior and habit formation. The main findings were that (1) opioid peptides but not opioid receptors and classic neurotransmitters are markedly lateralized in the anterior cingulate cortex involved in processing of positive and negative emotions and affective component of pain. 3. Imaging fear and anxiety in the human brain : Positron emission tomographic studies
Abstract : Fear and anxiety are central human experiences. However, the relation between aspects of these aversive emotional states and brain function have previously been studied mostly in animals. READ MORE

4. The aging frontal lobe in health and disease : a structural magnetic resonance imaging study
Abstract : Cortical and subcortical regions of the brain decrease in volume in normal as well as pathological aging. Previous studies indicate that certain parts of the brain, like the prefrontal cortex, may be particularly vulnerable to age-related processes which are manifested by significant volume loss in this region. 5. Imaging Chronic Pain and Inflammation : Positron Emission Tomography Studies of Whiplash Associated Disorder
Abstract : This thesis is on chronic neck pain after a rear impact car injury, so called whiplash associated disorder (WAD). Three empirical studies using positron emission tomography (PET) with different radioligands have been performed. READ MORE
